Day 6 after surgery

Posted by mpersonne @mpersonne, Apr 18 7:32am

Just wanted to update everyone on day 6. I would first have to say Thursday was my turning point, and the soreness was subsiding tremendously. I made sure I was getting up every hour and walking around the house, and that was key. Im still trying to have my first BM, and yes, taking things that was prescribed. Everytime I think it's time, it's just gas. More walking this weekend, and waiting on Tuesday to remove catheter and JP drain.

I avoided attempting a BM while the catheter was still in due to the irritation the foley caused. Plus the fact that I was on a liquid diet. After the cath
was removed, day 7, I started a light diet. 3 Colace a day and I’ve become regular. For me, keeping active is the key. Today is day 13 and other than the urinary issues I am eating a normal diet and feeling good.

When I have my prostatectomy, they left the catheter in for 14 days. It had no effect at all on my BM’s. Because I only took Acetaminophen starting the second day I really didn’t have any problems with going. There’s no reason the catheter should have any impact on your ability to have a BM.

I have to agree, every single instructional protocol that I ever read involves eating fiber rich food and having BM by day 3.

BUT, maybe if person suffers from serious chronic constipation liquid diet is recommended ? Never heard of it, though .

Let nature be your guide. One thing that I noted unexpectedly, was that when I started to "bear-down" a bit to aid in elimination of stool, I got a quick, figurative "slap in the face" of pain. Everything down there has been assaulted...pummeled. It will not be comfortable sitting for a #2 stool for a couple weeks...a little less or longer - I imagine that it varies. It may be different for men who had the multi-port/multi-incision prostatectomy, but for me having had the single-incision DaVinci method, that incision is about 2-2.5" wide, with more muscle having been cut through in one focused place vs the smaller incisions of the multiport method.
I never asked my physician what the hard lump was under my skin at the incision site (I will now that I remember). It may have been surgical glue (I had no sutures), and/or slow-release antibiotic packing to keep the site from becoming infected. It actually took about two to three months before the last bit of the lump vanished.

That is awesome news!

My surgery is this week, and we'll see what my future holds on that matter. As part of my prep, I discoverd that several hospital nurses referencing "Prune Butter" as a natural that is apparently a VERY effective laxative.

Do a search and you'll find tons of info on Prune Butter. Here's the basic recipe.

Prune Butter (Laxative)
• 1 cup (8 oz) prune juice
• 1/2 cup apple juice
• 2 tbsp unsalted butter
Warm it up and drink it 🙂

• Use a stovetop or microwave to heat the prune+ apple juice until it’s warm (but not boiling)
• Stir in 1 teaspoon of unsalted butter. If you prefer, you can slightly reduce or increase the butter to match your dietary needs.

Moderation is Key: Most individuals only need to use this prune juice remedy once daily or once every other day for quick constipation relief. Observe Your Body’s Response: If you experience cramping, bloating, or diarrhea, reduce the serving size or frequency.

Why butter?
• Introduce Healthy Fats: Fats can help stimulate the production of bile and other digestive juices, potentially speeding up intestinal motility.
Ease Consumption: The slight creaminess of melted butter makes warm prune juice more palatable for some people
