Day 6 after surgery

Posted by mpersonne @mpersonne, 21 hours ago

Just wanted to update everyone on day 6. I would first have to say Thursday was my turning point, and the soreness was subsiding tremendously. I made sure I was getting up every hour and walking around the house, and that was key. Im still trying to have my first BM, and yes, taking things that was prescribed. Everytime I think it's time, it's just gas. More walking this weekend, and waiting on Tuesday to remove catheter and JP drain.

Good to hear things are getting better for you!

Regarding the BM’s…how’s your appetite? Are you eating enough to kickstart things?

I had my surgery on a Wednesday, and had my first BM on the following Saturday, and then at least one a day after that - very small ones for probably two weeks, then they slowly got back to my pre-surgery experience.

During my first few weeks of recovery, I had a pretty good appetite and I ate quite a bit. All soft foods for the first several days (tomato soup, applesauce, pudding, yogurt) - I didn’t eat a lot at once, but I didn’t eat just the three meals, either - I grazed all day, so to speak, lots of small meals, if you’d even call them that.

That helped me, I think, along with the walking. Good luck!

@turtbean yes, good appetite, but small meals through the day. The small meals also make me feel really full, so im contributing to still expelling the gas from surgery.

That is way too long a time before a BM. have you been taking any opioids? Those can really screw things up. I was taking Colace, senna and MiraLAX. Those three were taken while on opioids. Make you regular.

I just had my surgery 3 weeks ago and i had my first bowl movement on the third day. I was eating a bread bun in the morning (half with butter, deli meat and cheese and the other half with butter and marmalade), then i would eat a small low fat yogurt, a cup of tea and a banana. For lunch i would eat grilled chicken breast with steamed veggies and drink more tea. Evening meal consisted in two slices of sourdough bread with butter and deli meats and a low fat yogurt and a banana. Throughout the day I would drink for the first 4 days only tea and water (at least 2 liters).
On the 4th day I introduced some coffee.
Lunch, was sometimes spinach or boiled potatoes with some cooked fish or rice with small chicken cubes and white sauce and sometimes a simple small omelette.

If you are on the 6th day and no BM, something is not ok.

eat some raisins or dates..a bit of oat meal with some honey..maybe a sip or two of coffee to kick start going to bathroom..as Jeff marchi mentioned, opioid pain killers can cause constipation which will be most uncomfortable...gotta kick start the gutty works like an old Harley...

Yes, I’d forgotten about the possibility of opioids. I was able to avoid that, so I’m sure that made a difference.

One other thing…my wife has pretty wicked digestive issues, and so she eats stewed prunes every day and swears by it. I also ate a few every day after my surgery, and I’m sure that helped. Matter of fact, I’ve never broken the habit and I still eat them every day.

They’re incredibly easy to make, too, so if anyone wants to know, just ask.

Also, assuming you’re avoiding caffeine…decaffeinated coffee reportedly has the same poop-positive attributes as the caffeinated stuff.

Did you talk to your doctor regarding your BM ? Six days is very long time.

We were told that BM has to happen by day 3 or that we should contact them. My husband did not take any opioids and took some Miralax on day 2 (actually 3 if we count a day in a hospital) and was taking Colace and Sena every day too.

You should not strain at all ! Be very careful - straining can mess up a seam on your freshly connected urethra.

My husband ate oatmeal every morning and fish and steamed veggies for dinner and fresh fruits throughout a day. Great amount of water and tea , of course, to promote flushing out "debris" from bladder and keeping urine light yellow and clear.

Please call your doctor for advice.
