Anyone have "cough variant" asthma? Vocal cord dysfunction?

Posted by jko1 @jko1, Apr 8, 2019

Anyone else on the forum with cough variant asthma? How about vocal cord dysfunction or the two together?

I have struggled with cough variant asthma for many years. Recently I was also diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction as well--specifically irritable larynx syndrome. I've had voice therapy, but I'm interested in other ways people are coping with the combination.

@SusanEllen66 and @5148branelly, the home remedy of putting Vicks VapoRub on your feet may help stimulate sensory nerves in the soles of the feet to interrupt the cough cycle has not been proven. There is no scientific proof that putting Vicks VapoRub on your feet will help ease a cough and other cold symptoms. Even so, many people swear that rubbing their feet with Vicks and covering them with socks lessens the severity and duration of the common cold. It can be soothing.

@5148branelly there are nerves on the bottom of our feet that “speak” to the cough center of the brain.

Many conditions have in common the symptoms of coughing, post nasal drip, and sinusitis. Sinus rinses with saline solution can be very helpful in clearing sinus mucus and irritants, along with warding off sinus infection and coughing. I have found ALKALOL NASAL WASH , which is a mucus solvent and cleaner can be added to the saline solution ( follow directions on back of bottle) to really clean and refresh sinuses and helps greatly in allergy season( year round for me). It is available on line if you don’t find it in a drugstore.
I also have been using one spray only of Astepro Allergy nasal antihistamine instead of Allegra. Goes right to the problem area! May be drying so find your own schedule as symptoms direct.
Another thing anyone with irritation in the throat and sinuses and lungs should look into is Silent Reflux. Different from Gerd and can be greatly helped by diet and initially Pepsid (Famatodine) but NOT omeprazole which only targets acid reflux and is very hard to withdraw from. Look up the little book “ Dropping Acid” by Koufman, Stern and Bauer. It explains Silent Reflux and gives great lists in red or green print of foods that you can or should not eat or drink. Takes a few months of trying to be good and conscious of how we eat but it Does work! Then you find your triggers and work your diet around them. I have EGPA and am on Nucala to control my other symptoms, but sinusitis is not much affected by it. I have found Alkalol sinus rinse ( I use a Waterpulse nasal wash bottle) along with the Astepro nasal spray is helping me a lot and avoiding sinus surgery which I have already had twice and does not solve the problem in my case. Just comes right back. Good luck to all of us, and we should all invest in kleenex!
God bless us every one!

@5148branelly it’s basically a plastic bottle you gently squeeze. Concept is kind of gross but it actually works so you get used to it. I bought it at Costco

Thanks. I have a Neilmed on order. It seems like a powerized Neti Pot which I found to be impossible to use. I hope this helps. I’d be fine w/ not taking Mucinex.

@5148branelly I also have it. My doctor said not to use cold medicine or mucinex as it dries the mucus in the lungs and ultimately makes asthma worse. My asthma is irritant and not allergic so I’m not certain if it affects you the same way. The phlegm might also be coming from the sinuses and, if so, you might try Neilmed nasal rinse (with pulmicort if your doctor approves.) most importantly, try to figure out your triggers and eliminate them. Good luck!

I have it all too. CVA typically bothers me during allergy season.

Vocal cords get burned by stomach acid if you have GERD. My ENT told me the take some Mylanta liquid before bed.
Excessive mucus is your body’s way of protecting the vocal cords…

Of course, when I have a post-nasal drip and it makes me cough, I put Vicks vapo-rub on the BOTTOM OF MY FEET with socks.

These are the things I do, hope they help you.

I have mild asthma and cough, but never wheeze. I have a couple severe pollen allergies and a couple other moderate ones. I haven't been diagnosed with vocal cord dysfunction, but was having trouble with my voice frequently when I saw a frontal sinus specialist who took a look. They were covered in yellow secretions despite aggressive treatment with nasal sprays, saline rinses and antihistamines. He prescribed Mometasone for the nasal rinse bottles and I'm much better. It's been 3 years, I'm much better and am trying to reduce it to daily now that pollen season is over, but often need the second dose.
