Considering Forteo

Posted by lisitabelle @lisitabelle, Feb 22 7:54am

Hello everyone,

My doctor would like me to start Forteo. I am 62 and have what is considered severe osteoporosis. It has been stable for many years and I have been treating it holistically (fit and exercise) and with Evista. Due to my age and underlying Panhypopituitarism (needing steroids for most my life) , my doctor is very concerned about my bones.

Has anybody used Forteo and how has that been? I am concerned about side effects and he mentioned that the black box warning of osteocarcinoma has been removed, but I still worry about that as well. It’s one of those things that I need to consider the benefits versus the negative side effects.

Thank you all so much for any information you may have.

Does anyone know if Keith McCormick took Forteo?

@lynnsusan Yes, he did. I just read the interview with him that was posted.
He had a history of fractures that prompted his studies.

@gently thank you.! I was curious why Keith did not do Evenity. I have read his Good Bones book and use the collagen and whey protein from his website. I trust his opinion.

@lynnsusan, it may have been timing. Evenity was approved in 2019, but even now it isn't approved for men in the US because the original clinical trials were completed primarily with women. While some men have been able to take Evenity the use in men, in the US, remains off-label.

@lynnsusan That could be a difficult choice but I think both might be the best options. I just watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch posted by OsteoBoston and found it very informative. An endocrinologist from a doc at Harvard. The first half is where he discusses treatment. Last half was for questions from the group. Maybe that will give you some extra info.
I didn't know anything about Evenity so went with Forteo as that is what my endo prescribed (and was also currently taking!) I'm on my 3rd month with it and not having any problems that I can report.
Best hopes for you!

@lynnsusan,
I consider that Forteo builds better bone. Evenity builds bone faster, and if you need reinforcement quickly because of fracture risk, it could be a better choice. Evenity gives you modeled bone and remodeled bone. Forteo gives you remodeled bone which means that fissured bone is removed before new bone is added.
A small advantage is that Forteo leaves your system quickly. If you have side effects you can stop them quickly by just stopping the medication.
I've never taken Evenity, though. I can only say that I'm happy with Forteo.

Leaning between native Path and Algecal but more toward Algecal with the 4 ingredients. Expensive but I will try

sharonkhale, the most common use of Forteo is two years followed by a year or two or Reclast. Options have expanded but standards haven't been reset and research isn't being done. I'm finishing a third consecutive year of Forteo. My doctor says I should stay on this medication until my lowest T score is a -1, No one has figured out how low long you need to be off Forteo for it to be effective. The effects seems to lose the advantage for the bones after 18 to 24 months. If your doctor and your insurance are flexible you could end up on Forteo long term or in any pattern. Most likely you'll be prescribed the standard 2 year Forteo 2 year Reclast.
It is good if you can follow bone markers to understand if and how well the drug is working.

Forteo seems to be the drug that people are the least worried about. I’m scared. However due to My high risk of MRONJ I can’t go on many of the treatments post Forteo. I think Evista might be it and that worries me due to my medical hx. Does that mean that I am either switching between Forteo and Tumlos forever? I don’t think my Dr is a fan of Menostar or HRT. Please advise. Good Luck

I've been on it for 3.5 months and the side effects weren't nearly as bad as I thought they were going to be, and now I have none.
