Considering Forteo

Posted by lisitabelle @lisitabelle, Feb 22 7:54am

Hello everyone,

My doctor would like me to start Forteo. I am 62 and have what is considered severe osteoporosis. It has been stable for many years and I have been treating it holistically (fit and exercise) and with Evista. Due to my age and underlying Panhypopituitarism (needing steroids for most my life) , my doctor is very concerned about my bones.

Has anybody used Forteo and how has that been? I am concerned about side effects and he mentioned that the black box warning of osteocarcinoma has been removed, but I still worry about that as well. It’s one of those things that I need to consider the benefits versus the negative side effects.

Thank you all so much for any information you may have.

I wanted to give an update about my journey so far with Forteo. I completed one week and feel fine. I had some light headedness in the mornings but other than that, all is well. @luckypup , I hope you’re doing well too!

@ipg Thank you for asking 🙂 I seem to be doing well on it. My endocrinologist is the one who chose the Forteo. His son in law, also an endo, has been doing a study on it for UCSF and my doc had been taking it himself. I wasn't familiar with Tymlos. I trust this doc so I did a little research and was grateful when it was approved by my Medicare and my supplement insurance.
I have followed a few tips here to avoid side effects....namely drinking 2+ quarts of water daily and taking it right before I go to bed. I also added MK4 that I take at the same time as it is short acting like the Forteo and is now being discussed as a better form of MK4 to help the calcium go where it's supposed to. I'm sure the jury is still out on that but it's easy to do.
I have had a few muscle spasms but I've had those in the past and I'm not sure what it is related to. I started taking a small dose of CALM...a magnesium citrate that you put in water to drink like a tea. I just saw that they have Mag Glycinate version as well.
I forgot to take it a night or two so I've taken to setting an alarm on my phone and putting it out in plain view so I'll remember. It's definitely a commitment.
The thing I like about Forteo...and probably Tymlos as well, is that it is short acting. Some of the meds that are an infusion once or twice a year or whatever were worrisome to me. If you have a problem with it, you are stuck with the effect for a long time!
To follow the Forteo? I'm not sure yet but I'm thinking of asking even before I finish, for topical estrogen and some form of progesterone as well as maybe a few months of Fosamax if I can tolerate swallowing it.
I'm not aware that Forteo or Tymlos messes with jaw bone like Fosamax. I might just not know about it. I've had jaw bone loss in the past because of dental infection so hope the meds don't cause more! I will keep an eye on that with my dentist!
Best wishes to you figuring out your path.

Thank you so much. Great news .Start the gym tomorrow. Scared. Due for a dexi but want to wait till the spring. Maybe it’s a good idea maybe not. Forteo is rec by dr. I take magnesium glycinate. Can’t take calcium supplements but eat the foods instead. I was always told mk7 not mk4? Hmm have you had any side effects- weight gain Hair loss too ? Do you know anything about Fortibone? At risk for MRONJ so I’m limited. What to do after the 2 years don’t know. I’m 70. How about you?Help

@lisitabelle Hopefully Forteo will help you. It sure worked for me and it has now been 10 years since I suffered a series of 13 compression fractures. I have had no further fractures, so feel Evista/Raloxafine has worked for before in doing a decent Job, and allowing me to benefit from this second course of Teriparatide.

Good morning. I’m doing okay on Forteo. I’ve started with a couple side effects this weekend that I’m reaching out to my Dr about today. I started having some tinnitus that is bothersome for sure. I’ve had it in the past but not quite like this. Also… I have a funny pressure in my chest. Not sure if it’s related but I read that it could be.
It’s scary to be putting a drug into your body that can affect it in so many ways. I know the benefits outweigh the negative side effects…. So I’m hoping that I’ll be okay.
I don’t take a magnesium supplement. I’m wondering if I should as @luckypup shared.

I’ll update after I talk with my Dr. this week.

☺️

I appreciate your feedback. I take d3 and magnesium glycinate. I have a slew of mild medical issues that I am scared about with this drug interaction. I am 69. I know it’s inevitable for me to do something. Have you ever fractured?. I am at risk for MRONJ so that is why I am scared to consider what to do after Forteo. Are you tired a lot? I hear about constipation, hair loss etc. why Forteo over Tymlos? Good Luck- please advise

@ipg I hear you! This path is complicated :-0 About the Vitamin K MK4... I was watching videos from Dr. Doug (https://www.youtube.com/watch) and he discussed it. I read some other takes on it and decided to try it. I get it from Life Extension.
As to other side effects, I don't think I'm seeing hair loss and the weight gain is a different subject. I eat more when stressed and the past month has been full of it...so I've been supplementing with chocolate and popcorn and toast LOL so I'm up a few pounds but I can't blame the Forteo at this point. If I eat healthy, I'm pretty sure it will come down again....hopefully soon!
I'm taking a collagen from Healthy Bones that has the Fortibone in it. I looked into briefly...sorry, can't remember what I learned but it seemed like a good choice so I've continued it.
Following up with something after Forteo will have to be figured out later. My doc is out recovering from a surgery so I'll talk to him in September.

Are you taking just the Fortibone or the one with multi ingredients?
