Considering Forteo

Posted by lisitabelle @lisitabelle, Feb 22 7:54am

Hello everyone,

My doctor would like me to start Forteo. I am 62 and have what is considered severe osteoporosis. It has been stable for many years and I have been treating it holistically (fit and exercise) and with Evista. Due to my age and underlying Panhypopituitarism (needing steroids for most my life) , my doctor is very concerned about my bones.

Has anybody used Forteo and how has that been? I am concerned about side effects and he mentioned that the black box warning of osteocarcinoma has been removed, but I still worry about that as well. It’s one of those things that I need to consider the benefits versus the negative side effects.

Thank you all so much for any information you may have.

I'm happy for you starting the wonder drug.
The NOGG (https://www.nogg.org.uk/full-guideline/key-wording-used-guideline) lists Evista as a "conditional" recommendation, meaning that a person should check with their doctor to see if it would be effective considering their bone mineral density.
"Consider raloxifene as an option for follow-on treatment after an anabolic drug in women (Conditional recommendation)."

@cat1203 thank you so much for all this information. I am starting Forteo soon and when you start reading some posts of people having issues on it… it is frightening. Thank you for sharing your experience and decisions on the follow up med options. My Dr. wants me to do Reclast after two years of Forteo. Praying this is the best option for me.

@lisitabelle Just starting Forteo as well and yes, it is nerve wracking! My plan is to take it right before bed. I have a tendency for leg cramps so I plan on drinking water all day and maybe taking a small Mg citrate dose to hopefully avoid any. Otherwise I'm hopeful for better gains than I would on Foxamax. And grateful I was able to get approved for Forteo. Best wishes for your (our) treatment success!

@broken13
Thanks so much for your insight. I have a question… can Evista be used as a follow up to Forteo instead of a biophosphonate like Reclast? I have been on Evista for years and will be starting Forteo this week.
Thanks!

@lisitabelle My endocrinologist tells me Evista/Raloxafine is not a strong enough drug to maintain bone density and is recommending either Prolia or Reclast when I am finished this round of Teriparatide. Given I did not do well on Prolia, that leaves Reclast, and I am thinking for myself, I will just go back on Evista.

@broken13 Hi there. My endocrinologist also said that. Worried about these biophosphinates because Fosomax was really rough on my stomach.
Hard decisions. I am dealing with stress fractures in my foot so I have to do something.
Thanks for replying. 🙂

@lisitabelle Hopefully Forteo will help you. It sure worked for me and it has now been 10 years since I suffered a series of 13 compression fractures. I have had no further fractures, so feel Evista/Raloxafine has worked for before in doing a decent Job, and allowing me to benefit from this second course of Teriparatide.

@broken13 Wow! so sorry to hear of the fractures you've dealt with! I'm glad you have had the benefit of the meds. No fractures yet for me. But funny thing....I received the Forteo yesterday but no needles included. I called the pharmacy company this morning. The needles are a separate order so they have to contact the doc who is out of the office till Tuesday to get a prescription for them. Very odd to send out expensive medicine with no way to have it administered. Not a huge deal for me but leaves me shaking my head as to the inefficiency of that but the med is now safely in my frig and I'll start it whenever the needles show up.

@luckypup It’s funny you say that because I need to go pick up the Rx for needles at CVS, but haven’t yet gotten the med from CVS specialty. 😂
It may be next week for me too.

@luckypup I have always had to get a box of needles and alcohol swabs separately. The pharmacist recommended small size. Says 0.23 mm x 4mm on the box. I also go get my alcohol swabs at the Dollar store. 200 individually wrapped for $3 is a good deal! lol
