Cold shower for A-Fib?

Posted by bustedthumb66 @bustedthumb66, 5 days ago

Had a high pulse A-Fib a few years ago for a day and a haft and after a couple years stopped taking my meds. Saturday had a mild relapse and made appointment with cardiology today. Taking a shower to get ready a thought came to me to use very cold water where it kinda takes your breath away and boom , normal pulse again. Guess I'll stay on meds this time. Wish I had thought of cold water Saturday!

@jc76 thanks for your post, helpful information. Funny I’ve been working the last 6+ months on our landscape. At times it has been very strenuous. It felt good, I was tired, was sleeping better. Then all a sudden one night in early April my afib returned after maze surgery 14.5 years ago and not having any issues between operation and April. It certainly has my head spinning as to what the heck is going on? Did I overload my electrical system?

Grew up on large farm in Ca. I'm thinking of growing flowers bees like in backyard. Could be a start for a hobby and help out the bees at same time.

As you know not a cardiologist but when you mention very strenuous on you that might have been the trigger?

Maybe talked to or send a message if you have a portal to your cardilogist or if you have one your EP. Not knowing your health history and even if did not a medical professional over doing it is not good for cardiovascular system if you have medical issues especially cardiovascular.

I am allowed to do Sprint Triathlons even though I have heart failure and have a ICD/Pacemaker. But I had to promise would do a moderate level and not maxium effort at any time. So I am slow and back of pack but really enjoy doing them. When people see my age on back of my leg I hear "oh what an inspiration, I hope I am out here at your age still racing."

Interesting I.D. Do you have a busted thumb?

When you see your cardiologist can you bring up your cold water success with him/her and let us know what he says? It sounds like you may have done sharp breathing in our or gasping and could have acted on your AFIB.

Why did you come off your meds? Did your cardilogist know you came off?

I do not many times cardilogist have suggested non medical ways to try and get your heart back in rympthm. I don't remember them but something like coughing hard, does squad, val salva, etc. I really don't want to infer thse are what they said try just referring to something like that I read or was told.

The cold shower if succesful and cardiologist says okay to try sounds good. It even sounds good to use and quite frankly refreshing as I sit here in hot Florida.

A large glass of ice water as well as running cold water on the inside of the wrists is my “go-to” when no time for cold shower. Shock the vagus nerve any way you can to tame the afib. Adding the metoprolol tartrate is the last resort if afib will not stop on its own or with ice water treatment. This in addition to low doses of metoprolol succinate(pm), Flecanide(am+pm) and eliquis(am+pm) - going to exercise now!

Oh I’m always doing things I’m sure are not good for me. But things have to get done and I can’t afford to properly pay someone to do it and do it right. My early years were growing up on a farm in the Midwest. There are no holidays or vacations for most small farmers you just have to get things done. This has kind of stuck with me over the years.
