Chronic salty taste

Posted by bel59 @bel59, May 31, 2024

Hello
Has or is anyone experiencing intense & chronic salty taste in the mouth? If so have you gained any relief or insight from any type of practitioner. I am a long term sufferer and it is a very mentally debilitating condition.
Thx Bel

@neisie13 Hey, we share your pain and anxiety. Because there is no respite from this thing (apart from being asleep) and the gradual worsening it's hard to fathom just where I/we will end up. Has anyone tried hypnosis? Don't know how/if this might help (perhaps psychosomatic) but have tried everything else so why not. Best wishes.

@bel59 , I consulted with a psychologist who practices with hypnosis last year. She felt she could help me. I postponed it due to me feeling it was not a good fit for me. I do intend to try it in the future with another provider. It’s worth a try.

Mine still seems slightly better than it used to be last year. I’m not sure if it’s better or if I’m just used to it. Idk, but mine is more tolerable. I hope that brings hope to others.

All the things that relieve symptoms don’t really help the condition. They just make it tolerable for a short while. Just a few moments of relief is a blessing.

Hi Everyone, I too suffer from a very salty taste in my mouth. This just started a week ago, but it is incredibly upsetting to me. The saltiness is unbearable. I don't know what to do about this. 🙁 It feels like my salivary glands are producing way too much salt and it's constant.

Yes all the time … only respite is when I’m asleep.

@bel59 Hello, I would like to join the discussion. I apologize for my English. I have had this salty feeling in my mouth for 2 years. At the same time, I also had back pain. May I ask how you managed to solve it? Thank you Eva

My taste issue started Sept 2023. It’s been constant, but has improved somewhat. It’s very mentally challenging. It has gotten easier to accept, though. I hold on to hope for the future.

I have found a bit of relief from putting a drop of manuka honey on my tongue. It alleviates the saltiness for a short while and makes life very pleasant. I've been doing this throughout the day. I also have been rinsing with baking soda and salt and that surprisingly diminishes the terrible salty taste my tongue produces. I don'ts rinse with water, though I spit of the till I don't need to .

Is it an actual production of a salty taste or just a feeling of saltiness? Do partners notice the saltiness? I only feel the saltiness myself — no one else can taste it, right? Does anyone have any other problems too? For example, with the back? Burning feet, etc.?

@legieliga00 I should have phrased that differently. It is NOT the production of salt, it is my tongue's irritation? I recently had Invisalign on my teeth and it was a form of torture. After having worn them for two months, all of a sudden my mouth felt like I was sucking on salt. It was horrendous. This was very recently, and I gave up the aligners. But I am still experiencing this overwhelmingly saltiness on my tongue. I am not sure if it is an allergic reaction or irritation. I have no other issues.

The odd taste that I have is subjective. Initially, it was very metallic like. Gradually, it went from strong metallic to moderate. Then to low. Now it’s more like a salty taste. At one point it was like if you accidentally got the shell from a pecan in your mouth. That bitter, terrible taste was what I had all the time.

The challenge seems to be that doctors aren’t sure what causes it. And there is no way to treat it. So, I’ve treated symptoms and work on being as healthy as possible. I don’t think most people realize how stressful it is.

@legieliga00 Hi … sad to hear of your experience. My salty taste experience is now in its 7th year and is ever gradually worsening. This is not to say that your condition won’t resolve itself anytime soon (maybe even tomorrow .. who knows). I have tried every possible doctor/specialist/naturopath/ acupuncturist etc I can think of to no avail and they collectively have no idea what has caused it and therefore cannot specifically target a treatment. It has been life changing, frustrating and depressing. Hopefully your experience is not like mine. Best wishes.
