Causes of Sleep Apnea

Does anyone here know the cause of their sleep disorder? Mine is caused by a too short jaw or Class 2 Malocclusion. I wish there was something that could be done but sadly, there is not much. I wish the dental field was better with identifying and treating medical causes of sleep apnea!

Hi, @rarelybees2889 – that is unfortunate that the cause of your sleep apnea does not appear to have much of a remedy.

Wondering what type of sleep apnea you have, prompted by caused by a too short jaw or Class II malocclusion? Is it obstructive sleep apnea (see https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/sleep-apnea/symptoms-causes/syc-20377631)?

Hi, @rarelybees2889 – I have obstructive sleep apnea which I think is when the throat muscles relax. I've always been a loud snorer even as a teenager and it got worse as I entered my senior years ☺. I wasn't diagnosed until last year when a Mayo doctor checking me for other condtions asked a few questions and referred me to a sleep medicine doctor for a follow up where I was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. I now use a CPAP machine. Sadly like you mention there are many causes of sleep disorders and many different treatments which I think is a good thing. The problem is finding the best one for each of us.

I'm now finding other things that affect my getting a good nights sleep – arthritis for one.

Has your doctor suggested any treatments?
