Can't get an appointment: Any tips on what to do?

Posted by radiocity @radiocity, Jul 2, 2021

Over a year trying to get an appointment, Scottsdale/Phoenix. I have two issues that may or may not be related. 5 'regular' doctors and 2 years later reveals what are likely lumbar spinal issues, but none of them can account for an issue in my left abdominal area. Last Doc I saw sent referral to Mayo, April 2020. Mayo says 2-3 years to establish primary care. I asked for an appt (internal medicine, interns, anyone at this point) for a comprehensive physical, to basically start over, but I keep getting rejected. I don't understand.

Mayo is selective in choosing who they will help. After jumping through their requested hoop and having a test done, they said they could not help me. Very elitist!

@gottab, I'm sorry to hear of your disappointment with Mayo Clinic. Can you tell me a bit more? Did you get an appointment with Mayo? Or did they determine based on your history and test results that they could not provide additional care beyond the care you are currently receiving?

I asked for an appointment for recurrent abdominal hernia. Mayo then said they needed from me a current ct scan of the area, which I had done, and then sent it to them. Shortly after got a call from one of their bank of operators who said they could not help me. I then asked if that meant Mayo would never accept me and he said yes. So, I am forced to write off Mayo for any of my future needs.

@gottab, thanks for the additional information. Now I understand better. Currently, Mayo Clinic has more requests for appointments than available openings, and some departments like internal medicine and GI are in particularly high demand.

I wonder if looking for a hospital associated with the Mayo Clinic Care Network might be an option for you.
"The Mayo Clinic Care Network is a select group of independent health systems that are granted special access to Mayo Clinic's extensive knowledge and world-leading medical expertise. Carefully vetted and selected for their commitment to high-quality patient experience, care network members share Mayo Clinic's goal of providing patients the care they need, close to home, at no additional cost to the patient."

So if Mayo already had too many requests for these particular areas, I’m wondering why they asked me to get a CT scan in the first place. It would’ve been better for public relations just to tell me that at the beginning. I still do not understand if I am persona non grata with Mayo.

@gottab,
Many factors are considered, capacity being one. Appointments at Mayo Clinic are prioritized on the basis of medical need. Availability depends on the nature and urgency of the problem and Mayo Clinic's ability to help (as determined by a Mayo Clinic doctor). The complexity of the medical condition and the availability of care closer to home are important factors to consider.

I do not have answers as to why Mayo Clinic is unable to see you at this time. However, I do know that you are not persona non grata. Given that you were asked to send additional imaging studies suggests that your case was reviewed carefully. Other members have shared that after being denied (even more than once), they tried again and were able to get an appointment.

There are a few options you might try as others have suggested:
1. Ask you current GI to submit a physician referral.
2. Try another Mayo location if that is an option for you.
3. Look into the Mayo Clinic Care Network.

Hi Liz, welcome.
Did you self refer or submit a request through your physician?

Thank you sorry for delayed response. I had 2 episodes that left me unable to check Mayo Connect. Thanks for your help!

Hi there, I am so sorry to hear you are going through this. I just seen Mayo for the first time in March at the Rochester location. I was able to get an appt with GI and than they refer out to other depts they thought I should see. Maybe since you have some GI symptoms, you could try applying to GI. I still am not diagnosed but they are working on it still. I will keep my fingers crossed for you that you get in.

When I briefly lived in Arizona and sent CD of cervical images I was told they couldn’t help me. Don’t know if being a Medicare patient determines that? However, since returning to the Midwest I have been seen at Mayo in Rochester.

I am on Medicare also, so I believe that has a lot to do with it. Thank you for your input.
