Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome; How long until symptoms subside?

Posted by baronvonzutphin @baronvonzutphin, Oct 30, 2025

Hi, everyone. I am a 36 year old male and have been dealing with an extremely aggressive episode of CHS. This past Saturday it took me to the ER because I couldn't keep anything down. I missed some of the signs too. I never really knew about CHS until after my hospital visit. The hospital checked for everything and did all the tests. They didn't look for CHS because I didn't know and perhaps it was their first time as well. The zofran and opioid pain reliever helped and I got checked out the same day. That was five days ago and I am still dry heaving constantly unless I become a merman. It has been seven days since any cannabis product has been used. I must have too much stored in my fat cells to leave me be. I am asking for information but I also wanted to share my story as well to increase awareness. CHS is worse with these new smokeshop alternatives. What I now know to be CHS was much more mild with regular marijuana years ago. Regardless, it is time for me to say goodbye to Cannabis. I am writing this while holding a heating pad to my stomach.

@heyjoe415 , You're right about that, in the past the weed was naturally growing with no additives or tampering with the genetics of the plant, people smoked it all the time and I never saw anyone get violently ill unless they started drinking alcohol, the combination was tricky for sure. I have two sons who are grown men with families and I remember learning about the changes with cannabis, and it was getting more potent due to people learning how to to make it so, along came the hydroponic growing operations and this produced the weed you mentioned earlier that has a skunky aroma. I was born in the Netherlands and everyone thought that all we had to offer was cannabis and prostitution, truth is that the Dutch people grew weed for the tourists, they rarely consume it themselves. Lastly along came vaping, big mistake, first they promoted as a healthier alternative to cigarettes and that turned into a huge health disaster permanently damaging lungs faster and then the marijuana industry joined in by marketing ampules to go with vaping but the product is potent sometimes as high as 2,000 mg. I'm sorry for the long rant but it just angers me how our youth are being targeted for profits.

Thanks for all the info frouke. Very helpful.

Yeah Amsterdam had a very unfair reputation as the place to go for marijuana and prostitution. That has eased, I think. I hear it is a wonderful city.

I worked with a Dutch guy for a few years. Leo (pronounced "lay-oh".) Amazing guy. He spoke five languages, and like many Dutch, was absolutely fluent in English (as are many Swedes). I'd love to visit someday.

And yeah, I'm afraid marijuana went from a thing we sometime did in our teens with locally grown stuff to the powerful strains. grown in hydroponic labs. I don't understand why people enjoy it. It smells foul and is way too powerful.

Thanks so much for replying, and setting the record straight on Amsterdam!
