Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome; How long until symptoms subside?

Posted by baronvonzutphin @baronvonzutphin, Oct 30, 2025

Hi, everyone. I am a 36 year old male and have been dealing with an extremely aggressive episode of CHS. This past Saturday it took me to the ER because I couldn't keep anything down. I missed some of the signs too. I never really knew about CHS until after my hospital visit. The hospital checked for everything and did all the tests. They didn't look for CHS because I didn't know and perhaps it was their first time as well. The zofran and opioid pain reliever helped and I got checked out the same day. That was five days ago and I am still dry heaving constantly unless I become a merman. It has been seven days since any cannabis product has been used. I must have too much stored in my fat cells to leave me be. I am asking for information but I also wanted to share my story as well to increase awareness. CHS is worse with these new smokeshop alternatives. What I now know to be CHS was much more mild with regular marijuana years ago. Regardless, it is time for me to say goodbye to Cannabis. I am writing this while holding a heating pad to my stomach.

From what I have read and seen with my family member, it can take a while for the pain and stomach to feel better! Thankfully my Family member is now in rehab facility because of his addiction! Going cold turkey and never using again is the answer to a full recovery!

I never had nausea or vomiting, what I do have is the rapid heart beat and very high blood pressure. I only figured it out because continuing use made the symptoms worse.

Unfortunately time will tell. I’m guessing the hospital maybe gave you some IV fluids along with antiemetic medications. There is t much else they do I’m pretty sure. Glad you figured out it was the cannabis because ceasing its use should hopefully end your symptoms. You might eventually be able to use it in another administration method in the future. Sorry this happened. I’m 73 and I’ve been using cannabis in one way or another since I was 16 and never had such a mishap. I hope you feel better soon with the zofran to quell your stomach. Though it appears you didn’t tell the ER you were a heavy pot user?

I was sick with CHS for almost 2 years before I decided to quit smoking and see what happens.. I kid u not, I woke up the next day feeling good and haven’t been sick since! And I was a chronic heaving weed smoker for 20 years.

How did you stop? I’m so embarrassed that I am truly addicted to cannabis. I’m going on two years of hell. I had so much testing they found what they thought was a brain lesion and it ended up just being a growth of blood vessels nothing serious. But first I went through surgery and had an inch of my skull removed. Don’t get me wrong I am thrilled I don’t have brain cancer. But I don’t have the urge to shower because once it starts I can’t stand and honestly feel like I’m in a coma. And I don’t experience much stomach pain.
