Can we gain bone density with just supplements?

Posted by krexie24 @krexie24, May 8 12:22am

I got diagnosed with osteoporosis 4 years ago, and I refused the medication because the side effects, I’m 60 years old and have been taking supplements and exercises regularly, after my dexa my doctor told me that my osteoporosis is getting worse and wants me to take TYMLOS, I’m horrified just to think about injecting this medication into my body every day, anyone on this medication?

@maryandnans just diagnosed with osteoporosis. Thanks for your post I was wondering if I could treat this naturally and make a difference. My body and meds is always russian roulette.

@karpow67 one thing to consider when we are diagnosed with OP…do we have other health conditions, like kidney issues— we don’t want to treat our OP but hurt our kidneys while doing so. If using supplements, be sure they are 3rd party tested…there are many combos, but if any element poses a problem, consider taking separate elements such as D3 , K2 etc. Not everyone processes things like calcium and magnesium the same way . Careful research will be rewarded….and don’t forget exercise, weights, resistance exercises, and especially balance !!

I’m kinda curious about the genetic component of osteoporosis. Both my mother and father had it and broke hips ( of course they were 80 and85). My father also had spinal breaks from bending over so he must have been very severe. I am 79 and have osteopenia and am trying to do things to prevent it from getting worse. I have an 18 pct chance of hip fracture in next ten years. I’m open to any suggestions other than medication.

There are a number of subheadings under the main category Osteoporosis that deal with non medication approaches to osteoporosis care.
May ask what the objections are to medication.

@gravity3 Mainly because I take too many meds already and if there are side effects I manage to get them. Osteoporosis meds have risk of atypical fracture, jaw problems and gastric upset to name a few. Since I’m only at osteopenia stage I am taking the advice of my son who is an ortho trauma doctor and starting with natural things and redoing test in a year.

Thanks. How great to have a son who is a doctor to assist you in working through your options.

@roxiesmom13 Multiple conditions seem to rule out many of the meds…some of those conditions can be quite serious.

May I ask what supplements you are / were taking

@roxiesmom13n I have read that OP can be hereditary…but, we can be proactive with diet, carefully chosen supplements and exercise, which includes walking, resistance and weights. Especially balance—practice it every day ! (PS if you do use meds, be sure to tell your docs all of your health issues ! We want to help our bones without hurting the rest of ourselves !)
