Anyone take new drug Camzyos (mavacamten) for HCM?

Since FDA approval in April has anyone (non-clinical trial patient) actually obtained a prescription and had it filled? If so, when and where was the cardiologist located? Is the registration process for doctor/patient/Rx taking a long time for this much anticipated drug?

I pray for the members in the HCM group on my daily walk on the River Trail! I know what it's like to "live" with HOCM...you don't really feel like you are living...more like trying to survive! Trying not to die! Keep your positive attitude. You are going through a lot, along with so many others. It's good to know you are not alone...you have us! Even though I'm not a Camzyos participant, I remember well life with HOCM. I hope the stress echo is positive results only!

@whidbey have you tried reaching out to a Nurse Navigator at Bristol Myers Squibb? That said, I have not found them to be that helpful. because tend to refer you to back to your cardologist.

My cardologist has a nurse navigator that is very responsive when I contact the office ( using emails) with problems. My heart rate was averaging between 95 and 110. I reached out and got a response within 15 minutes that they were calling in a prescription for Metoprolol succinate 12.5mg. On the other hand, my cardologist says that rapid heart rate is a symptom of Camzyos. But it’s a symptom I am having. It is frustrating and scary. But it’s your life so you have to advocate for yourself.

My cardologist and I had to have a “heart to heart” because he is very pro Camzyos and follows the dosing guidelines to the book. When I tell him my symptoms ( initially I was lightheaded, now I am suffering from a high heart rate) he tends to say symptoms with Camzyos are rare. He reduced my dosage from 5mg to 2.5 even though my symptoms were not improving because it’s what the algorithm called for based on my limited echo. @kelliw’s cardologist deemed it was in the best interest of the patient not to follow the guideline.

After some back and forth, my cardologist agreed to do a stress echo since my obstruction is only evident upon excretion. We will see it there has been improvement in my LVOT and EF ( ejection fraction) since my last stress echo.

Bottomline, you MUST educate for yourself if you are having issues which is not easy because the drug is so new, know your LVOT and EF so you know whether you are improving, you MUST ask question, and listen to your body! You are an individual and this drug is not for everyone. Some respond very well, other not as much. Unfortunately, I appear to be in the later category. I have been on it for 8 weeks. I expected to be able to do a lot more by now. My cardologist wants me to stay with it. So I going to hang in there for a while longer. We will see what happens with my stress echo tomorrow. I may be headed to surgery. But, with the support of the group, I decided to give the drug a try first.

Use this group, ask specific questions. The participants are wonderful, caring people, that are willing to take the time to give you the benefit of their experience.

Thank you for your reply! I am surprised to hear you experience rapid heart rate on Camzyos. I have always had a rapid heart rate, but had no idea it could become even more rapid! I've only been on this med for two weeks. I do realize I need to advocate for myself. I do need to be more aware of my LVOT and EF as well as other things. I hope you learn more from your stress ECHO.

@whidbey, that must be a lonely feeling not having the support of a nurse navigator or specialty pharmacist to talk to when you just began a brand new drug. Being so new on the drug seems like you should have close follow up and easy communication, especially regarding drug interactions. Are you able to contact your doctor about this? It seems like a serious issue, and warrants closer medical supervision. You only recently began the Camzyos treatment...I just can't imagine you would have no way to communicate side effects to your physician. Is your cardiologist familiar with HOCM and Camzyos? @kelliw has an awesome champion cardiologist who has been so supportive of her and went to bat for her when she was told to adjust her medication. I mention this because you have to be your own advocate sometimes. Not everyone has a super star for a cardiologist, and they have to fight for themselves. @jaymaysea began Camzyos recently and had issues with adjusting meds too. Please be sure you are being heard. It is important because this is a new drug, and you need to be followed closely. I would encourage you to contact your doctor. May I ask where you live?

I have an amazing Cardiologist at the University of Washington and he is one who encouraged me to take Camzyos. He has seen amazing results with patients in his practice. I just don't have a nurse navigator or patient advocate. This blog has a wealth of information for me.

Thank you for your reply! I am surprised to hear you experience rapid heart rate on Camzyos. I have always had a rapid heart rate, but had no idea it could become even more rapid! I've only been on this med for two weeks. I do realize I need to advocate for myself. I do need to be more aware of my LVOT and EF as well as other things. I hope your heart rate doesn’t increase. Before I started Camzyos I was on Diltiazem because my heart rate really increased upon exertion. When I started Camzyos I had to get off Diltiazem. My cardologist does not attribute my current increased rate to Camzyos. He says it’s because I am off Diltiazem. But, palpitations are listed as a serious side effect of Camzyos that you should notify your doctor of immediately. So I did and he put me on a low dose of Metoprolol.

Taking Camzyos is a road that is not well traveled. We are figuring it out as we go. I pray you don’t have any bumps in your road.

I have an update on my update - it's a procedural matter regarding renewing a prescription with the specialty pharmacy. In my case the pharmacy is called Optum. My next Echo is in three months because it appears that I am responding well to the dose. My doctor's office requested a three month prescription. Things I learned being on the phone forever with Optum: Camzyos is not allowed to be a three month prescription only a 30 day prescription. Every month I have to call in the prescription (since there is no change) NOT the doctor's office! They said that was because it is going to a home address. I can only call in when I have a 7 day supply left or less.

My doctor's office was not aware of this. I have no idea if this is a Restriction Prescription pharmacy rule but the only way I found out why my medicine was going to be delayed (which I fixed) was/is by calling the pharmacy and knowing what questions to ask. I have no idea if this is true for everyone or only Optum pharmacy. I have had so many shipping issues with Optum that I have called them every time I was told by my doctor's office that a prescription was being sent and each month it has been something. So be your own advocate. To me, it seems like they do not communicate with the doctor's office. What is most frustrating is that my doctor is chairman of Washington University's cardiology dept. and his department was part of the group involved with the trials for this drug and they are still involved. Sorry for being so longwinded but I recall others have had delivery issues in the past.

Good morning! I am so puzzled that BMS hasn't put a nurse navigator with you. I thought it was the protocol. When I signed up the NN called the next day and continues to call once a month to make sure everything is going well. I would think BMS would insist on this to make sure there aren't any problems. It is so strange that all of us on this site have such different experiences. It is really helpful that we all talk to try to figure this stuff out. I am so happy that you have a great cardiologist! That is encouraging! 🙂

What an ordeal @nbs! Jeesh...
You have had quite a frustrating time just trying to keep up with not only the pharmacy's rules, that make little sense, but also the lack of communication to your doctor. We have a new member, @whidbey, who also just began a week ago on Camzyos thru University of Washington. Sharing your information may help them prepare better. The good news is you are doing so well. Yay! But the stress of always having to stay on top of every little thing must make you a little crazy. I'm glad you were able to vent here on Connect. Hang in there!

I have been on Camzyos for over a year. In fact, I started this string in the beginning when I was trying to get my first prescription. Here are my thoughts on your post.
CVS Specialty Rx has never dropped the ball.
They send email reminders each month and ship express 1 to 3 days to home or local CVS ..... your choice.
You must have fewer than 10 pills on hand in order for them to ship.
Yes you call Rx every month and talk briefly to an intake person and then transferred to their Specialty Pharmacist who asks the same safety questions each time. It's their professional responsibility and for your well being. All seem to be very competent and very friendly.
Refills are 30 days max. Dr may write a script to cover 90 days (3 refills) but only 30 at a time.
BMS nurse navigator has become less of a factor over my experience. Some delays in receiving order could have to do with payment by third parties who are involved in your account (copayment, a grant, valid credit card, etc.). Ask the pharmacy intake person each time if payment is clear as they should be able to give you an answer from their screen.
Hopefully this has been helpful and that Camzyos works well for you. I praise and thank God every day for the incredible brains that invented it, and the entire team (although not perfect) He has placed in my life to help me get it! All is good! Persevere and try to be positive and at Peace.
