Calcium score

Posted by cindycossen @cindycossen, Apr 6, 2025

I have been on 40 mg simvastatin for years with a low dose aspirin. My cholesterol is well under control in fact my HDL is 88 my triglycerides are perfect. My mom had a stent put in her LAD artery when she was 70 due to about 80% blockage.
About 8 years ago I had a calcium store test and it was 21 and a couple years later I had another one and it went to 49 and then two years later it went to 69 but the doctor, my cardiologist said no concern and some of the plaque was in my lad artery I have cardiophobia I am petrified. And just last week he said for peace of mind, from my peace of mind why don't I get the CAT scan that shows if there's blockage in my arteries but to say that and not tell me to go ahead and do that it doesn't seem like he's concerned?

I've been on 40 mg of Statin and a low dose aspirin for years now. I appreciate your response

Statins are drugs OF choice.
You are doing well with your program

I am finding that my zero calcium score doesn't mean much. I have high LP (a) and it is trying to kill me. My carotids are about 65% blocked and I have calcification in my aorta. I am on Nexletol, Zetia, and Benecol. I cannot take statins. My ldl is supposed to be below 50. I understand your concerns. My sister says I know too much about my body. She ignores things and just lives her life. I guess we just need to do the best we can do. I am a vegetarian mostly and am very active. I do need to push myself more to get my heart exercised more. Best wishes.

It's the angiogram but they do it with a CAT scan 3D now to look at your arteries non-invasive

In my research and speaking with cardiologists, I get the impression that they are not so concerned with the possibility of a soft plaque bursting (thus causing a stroke or worse) especially if it is an inherited condition. If you are over 70, you should have been on statins and blood thinners since childhood. But unfortunately, us Boomers did not have access to that kind of research, and besides other co-morbidities may be of immediate concern. In spite of all the exercise, weight, and sugar maintenance, your organ cells are breaking down, mutating (pre-cancerous genes) etc. It is amazing how efficient our scavenger cells have been all this time attacking viruses and bacteria. In the Roman Empire you would have been lucky to live past 40. Before antibiotics, at least 30% of the population died of simple infections.

@kallettla but the test is indicative of a genetic history of CV disease and associated with your 65% blocked carotids and calcified aorta you need to take care of yourself.

A contrast CT or MRI could potentially give you answers. And be happy your carotids are clear but you’ve got other issues of concern. I’m not sure what cardio- phobia is?

If it were me, I’d do the test. You can guess what your doctor thinks. Do the test - information is helpful!

Relax, your numbers aren't that bad. I've been well over 1000 for 7 years and totally asymptomatic. Since you are already on a statin and aspirin, you're already taking action to prevent/slow your potential CAD. Just be moderate in your diet and lifestyle and enjoy life.
