Bp meds adverse effects

Posted by cher1947 @cher1947, Jun 28 2:56pm

I have been on 3 blood pressure medicines for about 5 years. They are Toprol XL,50 amlodopine besylate and 100mg. Losartan. Since January I have intentionally lost 39 lbs since diagnosed with prediabetes. After this I have had many adverse reactions. Shortness of breath, weakness, fatigue, aching all over, depression and anxiety. Wondering if meds could cause this. Have had all kinds of bloodwork, Ct scans, everything comes back normal. Do have acid reflux. Could u give opinion?

I have never heard of blood pressure meds causing shortness of breath. Weakness, fatigue, and aches can be caused by many illnesses or drugs. I think you need to see your doctor and possibly get a referral. Talking to your pharmacist might help too.

Lisinopril did terrible things to me.
Dizziness, depression, ideations of suicide, shortness of breath, just to name a few.
Nasty stuff. I won't ever take it again.

Did you look at the common and adverse side affects that come with your prescriptions. If those symptoms are not listed check with your doctor who prescribed it.

We on MCC do not know your medical or mental health history nor the other medications you are taking. Many times other medications will cause side affects if taken with other medications.

A pharmacist can usually look at all your medications and see in any are contradicting others. I now many posters have commented on the side affects from Entresto and other heart and BP medications. I take Entresto and Carvididol and when I was first put on it it was like I had the flu. This reaction is the same that many posters said.

I did check with my doctors and the said try to stay on it and let your body adapt to it. If it does not get better then we can discuss changing them. It took about 3 weeks but the side affects slowy went away.
Check with your doctors

Hi @cher1947, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! Congratulations on your intended weight loss. What a good celebration opportunity contributing to a new, healthier “you”.

Several have made helpful comments already. I agree that taking a look at your medications may provide some answers for you. I recently listened to an interview of a Mayo Clinic clinical pharmacist talking about how as we age or our health changes our bodies seem to change how they clear medications from our system. This may be worth a read (or listen):

You mention having recent bloodwork and CT with “normal” results. Are you working with your doctor that has prescribed some of the medications you are taking? Are any of these tests ones that have been repeated now that you’ve lost weight, maybe with results that have now moved back into a normal range?

I'm sorry to hear that. Especially since my doc has me taking Lisinopril while recovering from stroke a month ago, and my BP has been extremely high. Taking 20mg.
Plus half a 25mg Metoprolol tablet. BP coming down slowly, but still high.
Anyone else have experience with these? Trying to prevent another stroke...

After my stroke, my whole system was a mess for at least a year.
Blood pressure, blood sugar, digestion, emotions, you name it -- everything was out of whack.
Slowly I got back to "normal" -- or more accurately, a new sorta-normal.

Hi,
After reacting to all known blood pressure medication I can atest to those side effects and more.
For me it is like being Jeckle and hyde, they totally debilitate me. I have tried meds several times to prove what each one does to me over 10 years. Doctors tell me they are not typical side effects but with my wife backing up what they do to me they are starting to believe me. I don't like me when I'm on BP medication, Lord knows how anyone else around me copes. My worst reaction was grabing an individual who would not get off the road by the throat and physically moving him to the footpath. I think it shook me more than him, that is when I realised what was happening. Go off meds and I become human again. I have similar reactions with all Diabetes medication. They seem to unleash a whole different me and not a very nice one at that. Currently gone back on a very low dose of Lisinipril which has not done anything for my high BP and it is already causing me to react. Fortunately at this dose it is me I'm reacting to and beat myself up over silly small mistakes I make or the faulty hand eye coordination I experience. With a life time of precision working I struggle to be like others, not so precise. The hope is I may overcome the reactions and be able to drop my BP down from 170/110 my norm. There is a thought that I may react because of 30 years of high BP the body is saying no I can cope with less.
It is important to remember we all react differently to medications. They are only tested for the average person not those of use that react out of the norm.
Cheers

BP medicine is a bandaid and will causes everything you mentioned. I am a heart transplant patient and follow doctors orders for 4 1/2 years before I said enough . I went on aggressive diet and lost alot of weight. I weighed 215 lbs when I had the heart attack and I am down to 148 lbs this morning. I am off the BP meds, and a few others. I feel alot better and doing better. My labs are the best they have ever been. If I were you I would continue to lose weight and see if you and get to the point you don't need them.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, Scott! especially interesting to hear about the blood sugar issue. I've had type 2 diabetes for 27 years, and fairly well-controlled until this stroke. NOW, I've had a much harder time keeping it down (even with insulin) the last 6 weeks ever since my stroke. The very high blood pressure is new, though, and very scary, as is the severe arm and hand pain keeping me awake at night.

Bp meds definitely did cause me shortness of breath and also affected my eyes.. mainly the culprit was carvedhol I took 3.125 twice a day along with amlodipine 5 mg twice a day. I recently did some research on nattokinease and nitric oxide and started taking both.. I now only take 1 amlodipine and nattokinease and nitric oxide twice a day.. no carvedhol, I feel so much better.
