Bowel or fecal incontinence and how to manage it

Posted by Sarah @emyliander, Jun 11, 2019

I am 73 yr old femal with diagnosed Celiac, Microscopic Colitis and IBS. i don’t have diarrhea, BM’s are either soft formed or constipated small hard stool, but either way I can be incontenant of small amount of stool. I wear a pad in close knit underwear with legs, so nothing can escape. Any advice from people with same problem would be comforting and useful. I would like to know how you handled it on social occasions.
Thank you, Emyliander

Oh my goodness!! That is a definite nightmare. I am now considering tests for gluten and dairy allergies or intolerance. When I recently developed an ulcers in my stomach and esophagus, my doctor said I can only drink decaffeinated coffee. In order to try to temper the pain, I added half-and-half to my coffee. This seemed to really exacerbate my symptoms so I am now breaking it black. It hasn’t gone away, but it does seem to have limited it a little bit. We shall see! You have really been through it haven’t you?

@myladybug52 don't know if it will help you, but I found some low acid coffee that is pretty good and it seemed to help. hate decaf.

@samclembeau - my husband and I agree. We'd rather chance the energy boost of regular coffee, even at night, cause it tastes better than decaf.

@myladybug52 the one I am drinking now is from Sonoma roasters. I am using there Reserve beans. organic and mycotoxin free and low acid. Reserve is a med. roast, but they have several other, including French toast, that I have not tried. all are low acid. There are some others that I have seen on Amazon. But I have not tried any so cannot recommend a brand.

I suffer from an "urge" incontinence. Almost every day I get the feeling (an urge) that I must find a toilet immediately. I have two to 10 minutes and if I don't make it I load my pants with the main bowel movement of the day. A gastroenterologist told me I don't have fecal "urge" incontinence, but "probably have IBS". He told me to take 2 tablespoons of Metamusel psyllium fiber) three times each day. After 3 1/2 week I still have the "urge" problem, in addition to now having 4 to 5 healthy bowel movements each day. Has anyone had a "diagnosis" and a "cure" for this kind of a problem: an strong urge once a day that must be attended to or one loses bowel control. I need help as I cannot travel in fear of the urge problem. Usually between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. it happens, and after that I am okay for the day.

Hi there! I have the same issue at times. I’ve been doing Pelvic Floor exercises which I found online. They seem to help!

@tia8marie did you find them on youtube or a different site? Would you mind sharing the ones you found online? I have an appt with my GI in April, and am pretty sure I am being referred to PT for this as well. Usually the ones I see are for urinary issues not fecal issues. Thank you.

For those interested, I just found out about butterfly or b-sure small pads that you put between your buttocks against your anus. this helps hold back feces for a short time while you run to the toilet. I would think especially good for those that have little leaks.;would give time to get to the toilet before it gets on your underwear. also read about others that just wad up a small amount of toilet paper and place between cheeks. For more severe diarrhea there are "Tampax" like inserts for your anus that opens to a cup like thing (it looks like it anyway) and blocks the passage. Has a string attached to remove. these weren't cheap though. there is also a silicone blocker. Found these on the internet when researching fecal incontinence.

@tia8marie Thank you, I will look them up. I figure if they think I will need to try these prior to meeting with a surgeon, I might as well check them out.
