Migraine: Did botox work for you?

Posted by johnetteg @johnetteg, Nov 25, 2018

I had Botox injections for migraines 2 1/2 weeks ago and have been feeling sick. My vision is blurry, I have pressure in my head, I’m lightheaded, I’m having heart palpitations, high blood pressure and heart rate, my stomach has felt sick, I’m having trouble concentrating and focusing. Has anyone else experienced this? It’s really starting to scare me.

I’ve had nose bridge pain. There is a sphenopalatine ganglion (SPG) block for that pain. It’s administered up high in your nose to block the nerve pain. It’s not pleasant to get but can be effective.

Hi, @docb99. Nose bridge pain sounds painful, perhaps even more so if you wear glasses.

I believe you're saying you've had an SPG block for your nose bridge pain? Will you share more about what happens with this block and what parts are not pleasant?

I no longer get nose pain with migraines. I tried the SPG block and it helped but did not last very long. I did only one block.
You lie on your back and the medicine is inserted up through your nose. It’s quick -maybe like a Covid test???

I've been doing Botox for over 15 years, and it has saved me. Not a 100%, but a good preventative. The godfather of Botox is Dr. Andrew Blumenfeld out of LA. Look him up on YouTube and watch him speak. You can watch the procedure. I get 155 units every ninety days, then a touch-up in 6 weeks of 55 units (which is not covered by insurance). Good luck. Jim

Yes, I receive Botox every 90 days. I do still have occasional migraines. Self injecting Sumatriptan and going to bed will almost always get rid of the migraine. I recently began self-injecting Ajovi once per month. This has reduced the frequency and severity of the migraines.
I wish you well!

Has anyone tried Botox injections for migraines? I'm going to get them next week for the first time.

Yes, I had Botox for Migraines 2 times and it worked great and after the 3rd shot I was experiencing double vision in both eyes, then I noticed my eyes were tiring easily by early afternoon as though I was using them too much! (Yes, that sounds crazy, but that's how they actually felt) I made an appointment with my Neurologist and they insisted it was not the Botox injection and scheduled the next session. I started to have awful pain in my left temple and called the company that distributed Botox and they recommended I do not use Botox any longer. I went to my next appointment and the arrogant head Neurologist insisted that I have the next shot, I should have resisted but had it anyway because he is obnoxious and unfortunately it has permanently damaged the nerve in my left temple and I am left with constant left eye pain and no longer can drive long distances or read for any length of time. I would never use this again if I had the slightest side effect, I would stop immediately.

I have had Migraines for over 30 years, I know how desperate you are to find a resolution for your pain and this does offer a solution...BUT, it is not worth the damage if you have the slightest side effect, so be very careful. Don't let anyone pressure you and don't do it in order to help with wrinkles, it is not worth it, just grow your bangs 🙂

Yes, I have, I stopped, it damaged the nerve in
my temple and my eyes and they have never been the same.

There are other options, do your research, your eyes are too valuable to damage for the sake of your migraines. See my full message below...

Thanks for your response and sending this over, Lisa. Perhaps my outcome
may have been different if the PA had used an ultrasound instead of blindly
inserting the needle into my temple. That is no doubt why the procedure
was successful the first few times, I was just lucky she hit the right
spot.

Oh well, I'm glad I no longer am a patient there. I should have left when
my favorite PA walked out the door, she was frustrated with how the
practice was being run, it should have been a sign.

I have a great Neurologist now that cares more about his patients than the
money that is coming in and that is comforting to me.

It means a lot to me that you took the time to educate me on my situation,
especially with how busy you are with all your patients.

Enjoy the rest of your summer! Thanks so much!

Lisa, I had no idea there was any other technique used being shot with Botox. Ultrasound? Shooting specific spots? We have 1 neurologist here. I do like him. I just figured he injected, (not really a shot) general areas around my head. Sometimes he let his visiting intern get practice too. I had 5 rounds of Botox. Didnt help…. On top of top of that, my wife said after the 1st few days it made me worse. Could it really have been from it not being administered properly?
I’d seriously like to know.
There’s a larger city about an hour from here but I dread going…
Thank you!
