Bone marrow biopsy

I had them in Duarte at City of Hope. I have had five. I would not say any were painful. What it is feels like is pressure. One device gets the bone portion and one the marrow. I would say Mayo likely has wonderful PA's who complete this procedure. but if you like your Marquette experience, that is good. Only if your medical team requests a certain one.

I also have had 5 bone marrow biopsies with 4 of them in my oncologist's office and the 5th one in the hospital. None of them were painful and took no more than 45 minutes easch time. I had all my bone marrow biopsies just with a local anaesthetic. I was able to drive myself after each procedure as I had no after-effects for any of them.

I've only had one bone marrow biopsy so far and other than a momentary pain at the end, it was just pressure. I think the numbing needle might have been more painful if I remember correctly, but the pain was always tolerable and quickly gone. I was diagnosed with SMM while on 25mg prednisone so I'll be doing it again when I finish my prednisone taper. I'd say to have your next bmb wherever is more convenient for you.

Hi Connie, I’ve had 13 bone marrow biopsies. Ten of them were at Mayo-Rochester. At Mayo, you have a choice of mild sedation where you are enjoying a lovely nap for about 10 minutes while the biopsy team does their thing. You will feel absolutely nothing and wake up to juice and crackers or Lorna Doone’s. ☺️ (My preference. LOL)
Or you elect to have a local injection such as you’ve experienced already. The speciality teams at Mayo are highly skilled and use the utmost care.
My first 3 were done at my local cancer center by 2 different doctors.
The first one was a breeze, sessions two and three done by the Marquis de Sade 😂
Anyway, if you’re comfortable with your doctor in Marquette performing the next bone marrow biopsy it’s a known quantity.
From my own experience at Mayo, I’d not have any qualms about having it done there either. What’s the most convenient for you? Would you consider mild sedation?

I had my first bone marrow biopsy about a month ago. Had it done at one of the local hospitals under mild sedation. Never felt any pain and snoozed through the whole thing.

Oh gurl, you’ll love the sedation!! I loved waking up not having fingernail marks in the palms of my hands! 😂 Just make sure you mention wanting sedation when scheduling the appointment. You’ll also need someone to accompany you to the appointment as you won’t be permitted to drive afterwards, even though you feel steady and clear minded.

By 20 minutes or so, you’re ready to head out with really no issues. I always had other appointments right after my biopsies and it was never a problem with walking to them or communicating with my doctors.

I also got the 3 in the room for the procedure to laugh. Honestly i said, who has their pants down real low and one person taking the specimen, one observing and one with the specimens. I had heard right here on Mayo i could ask for sedation. I never did it. I am happy thought, that others have the choice when they need a BMB.

@loribmt no I was at Mayo once. I see the doctor from there by video now. I think I'm going to make an appointment though and get back to Mayo. Best of the best and that's what I want!!!!! The trip is worth it!!!

My daughter had a bone marrow biopsy under sedation. It was painful and she is still feeling pain a year later and is unable to walk properly. We are going to Mayo to assess her ET Jack to diagnosis because she’s allergic to Beyer Remi and the Pegasus makes her ill and since it’s a weekly injection, she doesn’t have a life. She doesn’t have a life right now anyway because she can’t walk very far and is constantly nauseous and extremely fatigued we’re going to Mayo in Minnesota mid September. I’m wondering if anyone here has had a reaction similar to this from a bone marrow biopsy and if so, did it resolve itself she’s had two injections in her hip in her lower back and they have not worked. I don’t know whether another option is except for deadening the nerve and I’m not sure if that’s possible I’m really scared. I’m really disappointed and she’s only 24.
