I have arthritus all over. I eat nonglutin, no dairy, no wheat. Drink almond milk every day. The night shades are toxic for me, so don't eat any of them. I eat lots of veggis & fruit, fish only meat. I use no drugs except for estrogen from Womens inerna., Pharmacy, No OTC. drugs. I exercise every day & usually take a short walk. I'm 92 yrs. old. Can't use my weights any longer as my left shoulder is not good. If I have any uncomfortable pain I use a castor oil hot pack for an hour. Isn't old age great ???

Those are all really great suggestions to include in our diets but unfortunately, they won't build bone. If you are using tofu, check to see if it is coagulated with calcium sulfate if you are using it as a calcium source as the calcium content differs greatly. The soy isoflavones are helpful but the calcium content is important too, especially if by chance you don't eat dairy.

Depending upon the severity of bone loss, some combination of drugs (including HRT in that category) and targeted/safe exercise is usually necessary. There will be occasional stories of success building density "naturally" but it's not the norm. It's just the sequence of nature that in menopause we lose density. Some are slow losers, those with osteo are generally faster losers. I'm a very health conscious and active person and I tried to regain density by doing it all; walking with a weighted vest, dancing, organic targeted diet, weight training. I lost so much bone in my spine during that experiment and then realized I had to embrace pharmaceuticals and I'm so glad I did. I went on Forteo for 2 years which increased my spine density and I followed up with HRT which has maintained the gain. I was 62 at the time I started HRT and have been on it for 6 years. I've had no side effects on either. Well, one side effect...peace of mind that I am doing all I can to stem further loss. What a great side effect!

Thank you all for so many helpful and thoughtful comments. I suspect I will end up trying forteo or tymlos.

@kforrest

what do you think will help build stronger bones?

The anabolic drugs like Forteo and Tymlos build bone. Other osteoporosis drugs work a different way. They are called antireabsorptive drugs. Please google for a good explanation. 🙂

@kforrest

you mean it can't reverse damage but it might stop further damage.

I don't believe they will stop further damage; my impression -- what I have been told by my doctors -- is that they help maintain bone. But the degree to which they help maintain bone is something I can't address. I think the operative word here is "help."

@cooper78 Are you not able to use Tymlos or Forteo?

Has anybody here, who has osteoporosis, tried vibration therapy using low intensity or whole body vibrating platforms? If so, what has been your experience? Have they done any good?

I used my DUL’s, and loved it—immediately ordered one. Then came back and joint pain! I blame it on the Letrizole. I’ve since changed to every other day Exemestane, and was just this week planning to try the vibrating machine again, for very short time periods! I’ll stay in touch re: the effects. Generally, the more I do, the more bones and muscles hurt. But doing nothing has negative mood consequences…so I’m willing to try!

Hi Katrii,
Thank you for responding.
'Sounds like you could do with consulting someone who knows about these things and get some guidance about using it.
'Hope all goes well for you.
Best wishes from the UK,

I have found Consumer Lab to be a trustworthy and helpful place for information. I’m not sure I can continue to pay for it but I am very thankful to have found it and it has saved me from spending my hard earned money on products that won’t benefit me.

Yes, I know I didn't want to renew Comsumer Lab again, but I thought maybe it could help other peoplee with problems. I would be wiling to look up info for other people who don't have acess & can't afford it.
