Actually I think HRT is the best way to go, but being 78, my doc says it is too risky. I had used for many years though. I am considering now prolia.

Did your doc explain the risks she/he mentioned?

I hesitate to reply- everyone is different. But, I am 84, had total hysterectomy at 48, been on HRT against medical advice. Very low dose estradiol. I’ve had several serious falls (with stitches) but no broken bones.
EVERY female on maternal side had osteoporosis- stooped, hip fractures etc. my 70 yr old first cousin diagnosed, on Prolia. I’m still Ostepenia- I have to believe it’s the HRT. Every drug has side effects. Go for it!

Make sure you have done your own research before your appt.

As you go through this site you will see many research citations. A number of those have been very helpful to me as well as those folks who are posting their experiences. Osteoboston is another great group. No money involved just top notch speakers and they make the presentations available on YouTube.

@cooper78 did you stay on them each for more than 2 months? I was told the side effects magically went away and they did for me! The statins were a problem, which I abandoned, but the bone meds side effects went away. My experience is that sometimes 'because we need them" it ramps up our immune system for a bit. I hope you work with an experienced specialist to guide you.

I would suggest getting a different opinion. Reading the research. Its a delicate balance but seems the HRT is the way to go on top of the bone meds. "Risky" is relative, no? having your bones so soft they fracture is "risky," right? Your doctor may not be aware of the new research, which makes HRT not the risk they used to think. And women can restart or start at older ages now.

Thank you! I have read about low dose patches designed for those with osteoporosis. I will talk to docs about this.

I didn't like the idea of the patches because the dosages couldn't be compounded. But for convenience it is a good idea!
