Today is another day. One minute, hour, day at a time. I had someone tell me, when I got sober (this time, having tried for decades) "do not drink/use no matter what...even if your ass falls off...do not pick up." So far all the "today's" have led to being on recovery for many 24 hours. Grateful to be sober this morning.

What kind of meds did you get to not crave alcohol?

There are several good options these days for people with addictions to get help through cravings and withdrawals. A person doesn’t have to do it “cold turkey”.

Below are some links providing information about medication assisted treatments (MAT) for different types of addictions.

Alcohol

- Naltrexone https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/naltrexone-oral-route/description/drg-20068408

- Acamprosate/Campral https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/acamprosate-oral-route/description/drg-20066802

Opiates

- Naltrexone https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/naltrexone-oral-route/description/drg-20068408

- Buprenorphine https://www.samhsa.gov/substance-use/treatment/options/buprenorphine

- Methadone https://www.samhsa.gov/substance-use/treatment/options/methadone

Nicotine

- Bupropion/Wellburtin https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements/bupropion-oral-route/description/drg-20062478

Hi,
I have battled alcohol and drug addiction since the age of 14. At one point I did use Suboxone to get off opiates and it helped. It also helped with cravings in general, however this is a medication that can not be just stopped. It has to be tapered down or the withdrawals are terrible. The only thing I have found that has worked for me is AA. AA is not for everyone, however I find that the companionship and like minds of those in the meetings, helping me when I was in the dregs of hell, saved my life. If want to talk further, reach out to me if you would like. I was in treatment 4 times from the age of 14 years old. I would stay sober and then inevitably, I would relapse and was back to the races. This last relapse lasted 8 years. I am in recovery and have gotten through some of the hardest, most painful times of my life and did not drink. That is crazy to me as I drank longer than I have ever been sober. Hang in there.

Good for you! I have 30 years of sobriety in AA. And it does work.
