AA isn't for everyone. If it is not for you, there ARE other support options out there, such as SMART Recovery, Recovery Dharma, DRA -Dual-Recovery Anonymous (for mental health + addiction), Life Ring Secular Recovery. Most have online options also. Do a Google search. In addition to these structured support groups, there are online and in-person sober communities, options for a recovery coach, 1-on-1 therapy, and podcasts which could be helpful, and even books. Addiction loves secrecy and keeping you isolated - then it wins. No one gets through this alone. Please reach out. Wishing you all the best!!

@vmarie2 Agreed. I believe connection is key to deal with this disease of addiction. AA worked for me, but like you said, there are other alternatives. Spending time with like minded people, who understand how my mind works helps me so much. It is a primal need in humans/animals to have a tribe. It is in our DNA.

Hello @heartbeatz22 and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I can tell that you are pleased to get some medication support to help you deal with alcoholism.

As other members, @roch and @joiful, have wisely mentioned, the more supports you have in place the more successful you are likely to be. Are you also involved in AA meetings and/or working with a therapist?

As you are comfortable doing so, could you share a little about your history with addiction?

@hopeful33250 Has anyone personally taken meds available to stop drinking & if so can you please explain how the drugs helped you to quit drinking? I’m in straight line recovery for 42 plus years but curious about new drugs that weren’t available for me that many years ago & would like information on these drugs for some in my family that need the help?

Don’t let alcohol control your life and take away your physical and mental health each day. You can do this! You are in charge of your life, not alcohol! I took alcohol for many years to calm and relax my body not know that I was hurting my body more than I knew. I quit all alcohol in 1996 October 13th and next year will be 30 years without a drop of alcohol. I didn’t use anything to help quit except my demand to quit and not let alcohol completely take over my life! Use whatever you need to quit. Good luck.
