I have been taking AReds2 for about 18 months. For the past 6 months I have been having terrible bladder pain. Urologist gave antibiotics, checked the bladder via cystoscopy and didn't find anything but a minor infection. Couldn't figure it out. Tuns out Areds2 causes bladder problems due to the excessive amounts of Zinc in them. It is double the tolerated amount and some people have ended up in the hospital with bladder problems from AReds2.....be careful! I am stopping AReds2 completely. There is no real evidence that it does anything for prevention anyway so I'm done with them.

🔬 The AREDS2 study (published 2013, NIH/NEI) found that people with intermediate AMD who took the AREDS2 formula had a 10–25% lower risk of progressing to advanced AMD over 5 years.
I take Viteyes Areds2 zinc free- found on Amazon.

I am trying ti connect the dots… I have had moderate to severe diarrhea for about 18 months…. About the time I stared taking AREDS 2. Have been through every test in the book…
I am stopping this vitamin immediately and seeing if that is whats causing it. Also going to share this info with my GI doc at my appt on Monday. Anyone else had this long term? I had no idea this could be a side effect of my AREDS supplement

Yes, I recommend that you read this whole thread. You’ll see that there are others of us that have experienced this same reaction (and more), including me. Mine did not start as soon as I started AREDS. And I was going thru a very stressful time, so for a long time, I attributed my intestinal problems to stress. But it got progressively worse over the years, even after the stress had resolved. So I started looking for other causes. My husband suggested that maybe it was the Preservision AREDS. As an experiment, I stopped taking them, and my symptoms went away immediately.

I agree that there is no real evidence that AREDS is beneficial. And, as many people who have had adverse reactions to Preservision AREDS2, I can’t believe it’s still on the market with its excessively high zinc and vitamin E content.
Previously in this thread, I posted about my experience with this supplement and provided a link to an article that I agree with that I believe debunks the AREDS study.
Of course, other people have different opinions on this. But we each must make our own informed decisions about our health.

Same. Was going through a lot of stress so it didn’t hit me that this could be the issue. Did not start until about 3 months in ( went back and looked to see when the gastro issues started in my medical records.)

That was pretty helpful. I do see a lot of folks that are having the same issues. Has anyone had issues when they cold turkey stopped taking it?
I stopped cold turkey and did not have any issues. I felt better right away.
But I do wonder if taking those high doses of zinc for a few years has done any long term damage that I just don’t know about yet.
Did your AMD turn wet while taking AREDs?
