Are methylated vitamins safe for kidney transplant patients?

Posted by gtg13 @gtg13, Dec 11, 2023

I am a kidney transplant patient and would like to add a multivitamin to my health regimen. Have read methylated vitamins are better for absorption. My question is are they safe when taking Cellcept and Prograf?

@gtg13, Welcome to the Transplant Support Group on Connect. I am always happy to meet other transplant recipients. I am a recipient of a liver and kidney from a deceased donor in 2009. My transplant was at Mayo Rochester. I also take Cellcept and Tacrolimus (Prograf) and have done so successfully since my transplant. I take only a plain daily multivitamin with as instructed by my transplant team.

As a transplant patients, we are instructed to: Only take a vitamin or supplement as directed by our transplant team. Some herbals, supplements, and over-the-counter products might be harmful, even in small doses. @gtg13, I cannot find any information about the methylated vitamins, except in sales pitches.

Has your transplant team told you to add a daily vitamin to your daily routine? Please discuss this with them because they will be able to tell you if you need to add a a daily vitamin, and what kind to look for. When are your next labs, and when will you have your next appointment?
