Aortic Aneurysms – Introduce yourself & meet others

Welcome to the Aortic Aneurysms group on Mayo Clinic Connect.

An aortic aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of the aorta. The aorta begins deep in the heart as it emerges from the powerful left ventricle, gently arching over the heart, descending into the chest, and finally into the abdomen. Some aortic aneurysms can be harmless; others can lead to catastrophic problems. I invite you to follow this group and connect with others, share experiences, exchange useful information, and learn about aortic aneurysms.

There are some great conversations going on right now that I think you’ll like. Grab a cup of tea, or beverage of your choice, and lets chat. Why not start by introducing yourself?

I have a question about after the AAA surgery, I had my first and only check one month after my surgery the Dr. Said. See you in 5 years . is this the normal amount of time between visits . in the repair he had to remove the aneurysm and sew up the open part of the aorta. Could the thread or material used break over time? Anyone that has had a AAA please let me know how. Often you saw the Dr. after surgery. Thank you kdh1

Hi, I am told that I have an arterial infundibulum; But no one has bothered to tell me much, except not to worry. In the meantime, I think about my Mom who died when she bled out from an aneurysm, "in her back." That's really all I know. For the most part I am healthy, but have had a lot of headaches, lasting for more than a month now. After seeing the dentist, they had me do a MRI, & MRA test. Now I'm scheduled to see the physical therapist. I am wondering if I should be doing more? Any thoughts? LLouiseT

I too have a 4.4 aneuysm. I am scheduled for my yearly checkup in May. I do not have chest pain but experience shortness of breath and tiredness. Should I be concerned?

My diastolic pressure goes from 50-120 at rest. My O2 rate drops to the 80s when I walk. EKG and sonogram and stress test are normal. Could this be an AA?

Llouise T,
I hope you are seeing a Cardiologist. Ask the Cardiologist if you should be pre-medicating before going to the dentist. This is usually a large dose of antibotics before they work in your teeth to abate any bacteria from your mouth that may get into your blood stream and causing an infection. I have to do it every time before I go in for a cleaning or any dental work.

All the best.

Though I had an ascending aortic aneurysm, my story is much like yours. I too had open heart the aneurysm was discovered accidentally as I had no symptoms. It was about 6 cm. Had the surgery May 10, 2016. I did the cardiac rehab program at Mayos suggestion in my home town. After that, I have tried to walk at least a couple of miles each day. I have had no problems with any exercise and know I should do more. Really have had no aftereffects from the surgery. If I were you, I would ease into excercise, perhaps talking to your doctor about it, and then try to increase your time spent exercising. As I am now 75, I find I need to do some kind of fitness program to keep from being stiff. Hope this helps a bit and the very best to you.

I had hoped that I would be eligible for cardiac rehab--checked with my insurance and various hospitals in the area about self pay rehab--the answer was still a no go. I have been walking but need to build up my lung strength. I feel that being monitored would be a good thing--since this is still so new and my blood pressure has not yet stabilized to under 130 systolic. I appreciate your insights and wish you well!
