Anyone Taking Mirtazapine for Sleep?

Posted by dfb @dfb, Jan 24, 2024

I've recently titrated off of 450mg of Venlafaxine that I had been on for fifteen years. While I was on it I would wake up every two hours until they put me on 150mg of Seroquel, but that makes me depressed and groggy, so I no longer take that.

Even though I am no longer on Venlafaxine I still wake up every two hours. I believe, and I think my provider now agrees, that the sleep disturbances are at least contributing to my depression and anxiety, if not the cause.

Soooo, my primary care provider has ordered a sleep study that I don't suspect will find anything. And my psych provider has just prescribed Mirtazapine. I of course have looked it up but I'm interested in any first hand experiences with the drug.

Does it help you sleep through the night?
Where you able to stop taking it?
How bad where the side effects?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

May you live in peace and good health.

I got up slowly to go to the bathroom and got dizzy and nauseous. I thought I was going to throw up so laid back in bed until symptoms subsided.

That is exactly the problem. It does make you dizzy and I do not take mine until I am literally going to get in bed and go to sleep.

Yep I was taking Mirtazapine 30mg nightly for 35 years, was great I slept extremely well then several years ago it just stopped working for me,then drs tried all different meds until I tried a new dr she put me on venlaxafine 75mg highly along with chlorazapine and zolpidem been great ever since.

It helped me with sleep at either a very high does, 30 mg or at a lower dose 7.5.
I felt wonderful on this med but I gained loads of weight. All the advice about watching what I was eating was of no value, the weight just kept coming and staying.
I did find an other good effect, it stopped my allergies, something about it being a H2 blocker.
Good luck

Thank you!

Has your appetite increased? I understand weight gain can be an issue.

Increased body fat exacerbates depression and I don’t need that.

Thank you again.

My doctor just switched me from Trazodone to Mirtazapine because of loss of appetite and weight. I am not overweight and 80 years old, in good health.

I am sorry to say I took my first 7.5 dose last night, and it was unpleasant. I slept, but I felt like a zombie all day today. I am sticking with Trazodone. At least it has a short half-life. I am also looking into cannabis strains for insomnia.

I have taken mirtazepine for 5 nights now. I reckon it takes over 3 hours to kick in. I do sleep on it but wake up
Late morning. Took 15mg at 8pm last night, maybe fell asleep between 11 and 12. Will start taking it even earlier

My background is treatment resistant depression and generalized anxiety disorder, with a past history of panic disorder.
I have been taking 15 mg of mirtazipine at bedtime for approx 2 months. I don’t notice any side effects, and I do sleep through the night. I should mention I also take 1 mg clonazepam at bedtime.
Before I started this regimen I didn’t ever sleep all night, and awoke with severe anxiety. I haven’t tried getting off it, so I have no input for that.
I hope you have success with it.

Thank you. One of these drugs has given me tinnitus. I have committed to taking them thru 4/22. We’ll see. Heard the same thing about 7.5 mirtazapine.

@jgshoes My tinnitus went after I had my ears syringed.
