Anyone have thyroid problems along with mental health issues?

Posted by ashleyharris728 @ashleyharris728, May 6 10:10pm

recently I’ve been having pain in my thyroid and trouble swallowing. Endo docs don’t seem that concerned (I contacted them by portal message - I have a history of thyroid problems) and they say it’s probably just stress from a virus (although I haven’t been sick)

Is this normal to have intermittent pain and difficulty swallowing? This just started in the last couple months.

Since starting lithium I worry extra about thyroid issues.

Sounds like you’re in a little bit of a messy medical situation. It sounds like you may have a Thyroid condition as swelling is not normal. You may have nodules on your thyroid or it could just be that you have Hashimoto’s with Hypothyroidism and need hormone medication like Synthroid or Levothyroxine to control the Hypothyroidism. If you have nodules on your Thyroid, you may need surgery to remove them, but they will most likely be watched initially after being diagnosed. They could also be malignant and need to come out. My daughter had a 6 1/2 hour surgery to remove her thyroid and several nodules due to thyroid cancer. Non-smoker as well and she is doing well 3 years post surgery. Don’t play around with your health here, it could be dangerous. I would also find a new Endocrinologist that specializes in Thyroid conditions. Yours is not helping you at all!

@lkirnbauer thanks for your care and concern. I did have biopsies done and so far everything looks benign. I had a couple removed due to their very large size. But the thing about benign tumors is that they have nothing to do but grow, especially if they have cystic components where they can accumulate fluid. My guess is that in the last few months something has changed because of the pain, trouble swallowing, etc. I am being seen by endo at Mayo so I think that’s about as good as I’m going to get, other than the difficulty in obtaining follow-up visits.
I’m glad to hear your daughter is doing well and that everything went great with her surgery. Did she struggle with her meds at all? I had a family member struggle with meds after their thyroid was removed and I am not 100% sure why that was, but it makes me nervous to get mine taken out completely.

@ashleyharris728 No, my daughter has no trouble taking medication, although she is only 46 and isn’t on any other medication besides her Thyroid medications. I don’t know why that would affect your medications, but I guess anything is possible. She’s 3 years post surgery and doing great! Thanks for your concern and wishing you all the best.

@ashleyharris. I hope you get to someone who can evaluate your thyroid. I know this all can be so overwhelming. Day at a time. I just got brain scans at Amen Clinic near Chicago and am very interested to see what I learn from process. Want you to have happiness.

@lkirnbauer sorry, I wasn’t clear in my question. What I meant to say was, did she have a hard time titrating her hormone levels when she went on levothyroxine? I have some relatives with thyroid issues and they seem to have troubles getting those hormone levels in the right range where they feel comfortable - not hypothyroid, not hyperthyroid, but just right. That’s the main thing I fear about getting my thyroid removed. Currently I do not take thyroid meds because my TSH shows up normal. I take so many other meds for mental health issues, I’m reluctant to start playing around with hormones if it’s a challenging thing to get right. I’m also afraid of how things could change hormonally in the next few years (I’m 40, so I always wonder what sorts of surprises perimenopause will bring me). Maybe surgeries and medicines have advanced since my older relatives went through this experience.

Going back to your original post, “pain and trouble swallowing” doesn’t seem normal and should probably be checked out.
If your provider thinks you have “stress from a virus”, that should also be checked out in case you need some sort of treatment.
I’m not aware of any connections between mental health issues / taking lithium and thyroid issues but it wouldn’t surprise me since the body has many parts and systems. If one thing is hurting or has a problem the rest try to help out as best as possible.
In one post you said “I’ll just take some meds and eat soft foods until the problem gets better”. What meds are you talking about? I would not make any changes to your medication regime without the input of your provider.
That said, how soon do you follow up with your Mayo endocrinologist? Be sure to bring these symptoms & concerns to his or her attention. You can also use your portal record to show that you have already reached out for help with this. Make sure your labs are up to date and available to your Dr. before your appointment. Hopefully steps will help you get some answers to your concerns.

@cehunt57 thanks for your kind and caring message. Luckily the acute issue has settled down (thankfully - they keep cropping up but then getting better).

In my previous post I was referring to taking OTC pain meds to manage to pain. I still feel like I’m having trouble swallowing but it’s much better.

I think the earliest I can get in for follow up is December, so I have a ways to go, unless I somehow convince them to get the appointment earlier, which as I said, they didn’t seem interested in (I don’t know where they got this viral illness theory - I haven’t been sick with one anytime recently, so it doesn’t make sense why they would assume that).

Anyway I’m definitely keeping track of these episodes for the next time I am able to be seen in clinic.

Again thanks for your kind message and thank you everyone for all of your support!
