Anyone else gone gluten and dairy free to help improve symptoms
Hi,
It has been suggested to me and i have talked to people who havegone gluten and dairy free that has helped their symptoms. justlooking for anyone here who has and interested if it has made a difference? if it has could you share some menu's or give me some ideas? and how long did it take for you to see improvement? i have some general ideas on what to buy but looking for more before i head out. its been suggested to me because i have hypothyroidism which until recently has been out of whack, hyperplasia with possibilityof autoimmune gastritis, possible sjorgens syndrome and maybe lichen sclorus. im waiting on specialists to confirm but i have to wait for appointments which is so hard. its kind of like starting fresh. in 15 months of being sick i have gotten little help so im traveling 3 hours to boston where i can get better help its just hard waiting for these appointments.i am seeing a naturpath dr in a few weeks never been to one so not sure what to expect but i think he is better than who previously i have seen. sorry to ramble just hoping someone here relates tome and can help me out. thank you!

@artemis1886 No, Synthroid is the treatment for my Hypothyroidism, but I do also have Hashimoto’s and control that with diet alone. My doctor told me that there isn’t a medication for Hashimoto’s alone. If you actually read the link you sent me, you’d see that Hashimoto’s is not treated with medication. Read it and I wish you all the best.
I have experienced a big improvement in my health since going gluten free, sugar free & mostly dairy free. I love my coffee with a splash of real cream! Thats my one vice left.
I have 3 autoimmune diseases & diabetes. This last April I was very sick in an autoimmune firestorm. 2 weeks in Mayo Clinic where they found my latest, Giant Cell Arteritis/PMR and most serious. I also had cdiff again.
I’m 67 & have had Lupus, diabetes & Hashimotos for 30 years & have never been this sick with my flares.
When getting home I committed to an anti- inflammatory diet. I never want to be that sick again & will do what I can to help my body heal. Some things I can’t control but at least this will help.
My GI issues that have been so bad for almost a year have improved greatly. My inflammatory markers were so high a few months ago. CRP of 266! Sed rate of 78, are now normal. Of course the prednisone did a lot of that but as I continue to taper down I’m still doing well eating the way I am. And I like the healthy foods I make, knowing I m giving my body the nutrients it needs.
Quick observation; I was tested a few times for celiac & don’t have it but every time I tried eating wheat or rye, even healthy whole grains, my blood sugar would spike. The same amount of carbs in other foods did not do that. So I stay away from any of those. Popcorn does that to me as well.

3 Reactions@gigi4 Well, I have Hashimoto’s with Hypothyroidism. You can have Hashimoto’s without a thyroid condition as well. Medication for an under active thyroid is something I have not heard of, but I’m not a doctor either. I control my Hashimoto’s with diet and it has worked for me.

1 ReactionYes removing gluten, dairy, white sugar and processed foods has really helped. Plus I healed my gut and my mood improved, no more gastritis and an increase in energy level. I eat meat, eggs, fruits and vegetables 80% of the time. I have a functional medicine doctor who finally helped me get some relief.

2 ReactionsHashimoto’s can affect thyroid levels and that is why I am on a medication. I had symptoms that diet changes alone did not change getting my T3 and T4 in the normal ranges.

My experience of being gluten free with type 2 DM is that the store bought GF products are often made with starches (tapiopa, potato, corn) and other GF flours that have a high glycemic index and may spike blood glucose, They also often have high salt levels. While almond flour has a very low glycemic index, I can't eat almonds. I have used oat flour (Bob's Red Mill GF oat flour) which is widely available in local groceries to bake oat flour bread, cookies, just about everything - from online recipies. I am also able to be on a low salt diet and avoid many additives including guar gums and other thickeners. I bake once a week and freeze what I bake. Suggest look at the ingredients in "retail" Gluten free foods for the flours used and additives. Look up glycemic index of flours.
I hope this is useful information.

5 ReactionsVery helpful, thank you! Ive been GF and dairy free (cheat with some cheese on occasion) for several years now. It was a game changer for me with my achy joints and since I had also found out I'm lactose intolerant I became pretty religious about no dairy because that definitely affected my stomach and I already have to deal with SIBO and it's flare ups which tie me to my house and it's torturous for me, very bad for my mental health to self isolate more than a couple/few days. So much my kids all watch me on Life360, what's funny is Ive never watched them growing up since they're 43, 40 & 29. Talk about the reverse with kids watching me, they will check in with each other if I didnt answer a text and see if anyone has talked to me in the past few days. Then if I still don't answer, the threat of sending the cops for a well visit will make me realize, shit I better answer lol. It's very sweet actually, they know me very well and know I need human interaction and cant go too long without it or I can start to slip into a depressive episode which I now know very well how to prevent it.
Having Autoimmune diseases have changed my life so dramatically from being extremely active to days when I can hardly move, endless pain, etc. However, it's getting better and better. I'm exercising much more regularly again, I eat super clean and make all my own whole foods. I'll never touch processed again, my gut has zippo tolerance for it.
It's been a 5 year journey of endless pokes, prods, tests, misdiagnosed with blood cancer, the list goes on. Healthcare failed me miserably and had to become my own advocate, see a 2nd and 3rd or more doc to find one who actually listens. I dont want a pill if I don't have too, tell me the root cause, tell me what diet, exercise and lifestyle changes I can make to feel better and ill make them.
Anyway, long story short - this entire country has leaky gut if you've eaten processed food. Until they wake up, heal their guts, get off gluten and dairy because they are NOTORIOUS for creating inflammation in your body - that means BRAIN too. You're going to end up with Autoimmune diseases, all sorts of medical issues, brain fog, fatigue, dementia etc. I want to ski until I drop dead in my 80s or 90s, god willing, I want to die happy doing the things I love. If that means never eating good pizza or bread ever again, so be it. I'm finally at peace with that and don't feel sorry for myself with all my dietary restrictions.
Eat clean, it will save your life.
Don't let the terrible docs, pharma and insurance lure you into quick fixes and bandaids to cover up symptoms rather than ELIMINATE all together with some work (implement changes in diet, lifestyle & environment).
It's 💯 doable, love the phrase, Just DO IT 💪
