Anyone deal with PAD

Posted by Fran P @fpignanelli, Jul 5, 2024

How is your PAD treated? This is a question from a friend. He takes Repatha that keeps his LDL down below 70 since he had a stroke almost 8 years ago but his PAD causes him so much leg pain & cramping that he finds it difficult to exercise & walk.

@fpignanelli do you have high cholesterol or smoke? I am facing a bypass and am concerned about it failing due to the vein becoming blocked again, even though I have low cholesterol and I do not smoke, however I did but quit 15 years ago.

@kfpd I do not smoke but did have high cholesterol, which is controlled by Repatha. I have had 6 angioplasties to open arteries in my leg for PAD. The last procedure done recently included medicated balloons & stint.
Good luck to you.

@kfpd I am sort you are going through this. I was diagnosed about 18 months ago and had an angioplasty which was successful only to have the femoral artery blockage reoccur with a 100% blockage. I underwent second attempt to clear the blockage but the doctor was not successful in opening the artery. I am now working on a walking program, which does not seem to be helping much after almost 3 months of therapy. I need to make a decision on a 3rd attempt with an angioplasty going in through both the groin and the ankle in an attempt to meet in the middle and clear the blockage or, proceed with the bypass. Sorry this is so long but you seem to have been through this and I am really scared and not sure how to proceed. Looking for any advice or past experience with this. I was smoker but quit 15 years ago and apparently that was too late.

@kfpd I have had multiple angioplasties (5 without stints) & the last one about two weeks ago, which included a medicated stint & balloons by a new doctor. My previous doc was an interventional radiologist but my current doc is an interventional cardiologist who had access to more “tools in his box”. My one remaining artery partially opened in my left leg was opened by this new doctor. This is keeping me from having to have a bypass surgery. I can’t tell you what to do but I want to do all I can to keep my one artery opened & avoid more aggressive surgery. I am trying to walk more to build lateral circulation also & taking Plavix now rather than Xrelto, which was recommended previously. I was told that Plavix works better for PAD.
My advice would be to find the right doctor that can do the right procedure.
Good luck to you.
