@randal This can be scary when it first happens! What is happening is called hemoptysis, usually small blood vessels in the lungs break, and small amounts of blood appear in your sputum. It can happen from hard coughing, or it may be a sign of infection or worsening disease.
If this is new for you, it is a good idea to bring it to the attention of your lung doc. you can do this via a phone call or message on your patient portal, please don't wait for your next appointment, unless it is very soon.
Be prepared to tell them:
estimated amount - drops, half teaspoon, a lot more
color - bright red, brownish
whether clots were present and estimated size
how much/how hard coughing preceded the episode
any other symptoms like fever, increased shortness of breath, green or yellow mucus...
