Anybody having nasal congestion issues lying down at night?
I am having congestion issues at night its been 4 years. Everytime i wake up during the night and one of my nostril is completely blocked , it is the most ANNOYING thing , gives me frequent headaches. Once i stand back up after a few minutes it unclogs...Ive already had two turbinate reductions + septoplasty but it didnt help at all. The nasal sprays dont work no more. If you relate to this post please let me know if some things brought you relief, thank you.

@jm1
Not sure if you have any other health issues.
Migraine/facial tension all can show up in the nose. Even high blood pressure and side effects from other oral medications all contributing to increased Trigeminal nerve sensitivity which is why steam perhaps feels better for you. More soothing to the nerves.
Many people mistake all kinds of things for expressing in the nose. Using OTC sprays to no avail because ENTs don’t have the nervous system discussion with patients
My nose gets blocked at night, I breath through my nose so I’m having a lot of sleepless nights atm as I’m trying to come off the oltravine nasal drops which I’ve been using for over 20 years. It’s helped me breathe at night but my nose is getting stuffy now. I’ve been to ENT had surgery to take off some of my bone as i struggle to breathe through one side. I’ve been given steroids drops, nothing works. I’ve been off the spray for 4 weeks but have started using it again because of one side of my nose. Are there any other medications I can use? I’ve tried a lot of stuff. I need to stop using the drops
jo123, Hey there! I have a long history of sinus & allergies. Things that work:
1) A cool mist humidifer in the bedroom.
2) Irrigation of the sinus with NeilMed sinus rinse.
3) Elevate your bed with wooden blocks or more pillows.
4) Nasal Ayr Saline spray.
5) Are you on something like Flonase? It helps as well.
6) ENT recommended me to use Afrin 12 hr for 2 days AND COME OFF. You can rebound with this and get worse if you stay on it longer.
7) Polyestyer or any other hypoallergenic pillows. No feather pillows.
8) A pillow case cover for allergies.
9) Wash sheets & pillow cases in hot water weekly....no perfumes. I use All free & clear.
10) Do you have deviated septum on the side of your nose that is blocked? That has to be surgical corrected.
11) The breathe right nasal strips that you put across your nose at night work wonders for some folks that have
trouble breathing. They are on Amazon.
Please ask your doctor before trying any of this. I wish you the best. Blessings & Prayers.....
I question if something in your bedroom is triggering allergies for you.
Wow. You have already are being followed by ENT and had surgery. I cannot believe that you are still suffering.
I think you should find a different ENT. Someone who can address your problem.
When my child and grandchildren get those problems, I usually use warm mist from the shower to help them breathe. Maybe you can try a warm mist humidifier at night. I use saline nasal spray for stuffiness.
I hope you find help to get uninterrupted sleep. I’m not sure if these will work but I hope they do. Take care.
I’ve also suffered from nasal congestion. Had CT scan….ENT says normal….so, I got much better recently when I took a regimen of antibiotics for a dental matter. I know…..it’s bizarre. It cleared up most of my drainage too. I have no idea why. Perhaps, coincidence. I’m also seeing an allergist soon.
Thank you
I do have a deviated septum, I have tried most of these, they only help if I’m not using oltravine, I have bought something from Amazon that I put in my nose to open my airways, I’m hoping these will help me to come off the nasal drops. One thing I didn’t think about asking my GP is for allergy test

Can you elaborate? Inside the nose?
I have those symptoms at night often in winter (dry air), at high altitudes. (thin dry air) or when I have an ordinary nasal cold. Fundamentally, under those conditions, I have minor irritation of the nasal passages. Sleeping on my side, the lower one always closes. Think of what you do for dry, chapped hands. I never had chapped hands as a kid. But as body surfaces age, or are subject to medical procedures and scar tissue, as you describe, the ability of the skin surface to stay moisturized declines. Anti-histamines reduce the nasal swelling, but do not cure the fundamental irritated (dry) nasal passageways. Vaseline or saline surface treatments helped as moisture barriers, but were insufficient and do not promote restoration of general nasal hydration. In the end, as the most effective nasal skin restoration, I use a Q-tip to apply a small drop of my favorite hand cream all around the nasal entry way.
