Any success stories about Evenity to share with fearful me?

Posted by callmekate @callmekate, 2 days ago

After acquiring 2 compression fractures, I am biting the bullet and going for my first Evenity shot in 2 days. I am afraid of everything from heart palpitations (I have AFIB) to muscle spasms and joint pain and everything else . Has anyone been ok on the shots? Or only had minor issues? I would love to read encouraging words. My REMS scores were ok: hip -1.0, spine -1.2, but my DEXA scores were much worse: hip -2.8, spine-4.8, so I feel I have little choice now. Many thanks.

@callmekate , I will have my 12th round of Evenity the week of Labor Day. So far, no problems at all. Some slight soreness at the injection site for a day or so, but not as much as a flu shot. Best of luck to you!

@callmekate: I’ve been on Evenity for 3months. I researched for 30 days and bit the bullet with Evenity because of good bone building in hip & lumbar spine. I didn’t want to start this procedure but I was afraid of fracture at 80 yrs. My Effects are mostly fatigue & not feeling my best (1st time I had bad-burps for a couple hours, but that was only once).
This is what I do to prepare for Evenity injections that I give myself in stomach:
Drink lots of water for 24 hrs prior
Take shots out of refer 1hr prior
Drink 1c caffeine coffee 1/2 hr prior & I eat 3 green olives (caffeine & salt supposed to prevent headaches by dilating blood arteries)
Put ice pack at injection site
At injection time I remove ice pack, swab injection area with alcohol, pinch-up some fatty tissue over 2 inches away from belly button and inject one syringe slowly; remove syringe slowly & repeat 2nd syringe.
Reposition ice pack on injection site.
I lay down & stay still for a couple hours or take a nap. Don’t get up & get active until you feel better.
You do what you think best, but I wanted to share my procedure in case you were on your own.
I don’t know any positive reports about Evenity except what others have shared on Mayo Connect.
Best of health to you… dbamos1945

Holy cow! I went into the doc’s office every 28 days for the injection. Tymlos shots were no problem, and I’m not squeamish. but Evenity has some pretty serious syringes.

Here’s one thing I discovered: Tymlos was covered as a Part D drug because I administered it in my home, however, Evenity was not covered and was considered as “other services” and the costs didn’t decline during the year. If I had had the option of learning to inject Evenity myself, it would’ve been covered as a Tier 5 drug for copay purposes. This is very interesting that I’ve read several accounts of self injection with Evenity.

To the point, I had 12 Evenity injections, had no issues except some redness and pain at the injection sites for a couple of days, and great gains between partial dosage of Tymlos and Evenity.

Have a great week and a safe Labor Day! Cheers!

I just had my fourth injection on Friday. Mine are administered in my doctor’s office. To prepare, I take a Claritin a couple of hours before the shots and drink 32 ounces of electrolyte-enhanced water just prior to and after the shots (within two hours). I also take a couple of Tylenol when I get back home.

My arms are sore for about 24 hours afterwards where I had the injections.

Over the next two weeks, I have increased joint and muscle pain that gradually dissipates. This is more pronounced when I am inactive, e.g., at night. I take two slow release Tylenol at bedtime. I also make sure I am very active during the day, exercising, moving around, walking, etc.

All in all, the side effects are not so bad. I had a fracture nearly two years ago and tried Tymlos and Forteo with much worse side effects. I’m hoping the Evenity will help me form new bone and feel that the minor discomfort is worth it. My cardiovascular health is excellent so I am not worried about that risk.

Hi @callmekate. I completed 12 months of Evenity 9/5/23. I had zero discernible side effects whatsoever throughout the entire course.
Best wishes to you moving forward!

@callmekate I had 12 months of injections last year. I went to an infusion center for the injections where the cost was paid for by my Part B of Medicare (I have Traditional Medicine). Some months I had a little soreness at the injection sites. That was the only side effect. The end result was that I made significant gains in bone density in my lower back and my hip. A few weeks following the end of the Evenity injections I had Reclast infusion in order to "lock in" those gains. I had no side effects with the Reclast infusion.

I will have another bone density scan and meet with my endocrinologist in 3 months.

If you are concerned about pain I was told to take Tylenol a few hours before the injections. I did that one or two times but found I did not need any preparation. I did make sure I was well hydrated and took my water bottle with me into the infusion center.

All best wishes to you as you move forward with your treatment plan for osteoporosis.

@beanieone: Hi! The reason my Evenity is covered as a Part B is because I chose to have the drug delivered to the Dr office instead of my home! Dr office calls me when it arrives and immediately pick it up, hurry home to put in my refer. I can’t say I like the size of Evenity syringes either, but I deal with it. I hope this explains my situation better. dbamos1945

I have had five injections so far. Depending on the person that gives a shot, sometimes it hurts a little afterward, but supposedly if they warm up the shot, it hurts less. as far as I can see I’ve had no side effects. I have had multiple compression fractures and a serious femur fracture. At this point, I was willing to try anything as my bone density is so poor. Hopefully after the regimen I will have obtain some new bone growth. I have been taking Prolia up to now, but that doesn’t seem to have decreased my bone loss.

Did you have to self administer the shot?

Would it be OK to ask why you switched from Tymlos to Evenity?
