Any house call dentists?

Posted by din @din, Mar 23, 2023

Has anyone found a dentist that makes house calls in lower Westchester, NY? My mother no longer walks and we live on a second floor without elevator, so it’s very hard to get her out of the house.

You might want to check with a private stretcher company that can transport her to the dentist and then back to home. If she’s able to sit in a wheelchair then call them. Most companies will charge Medicare or Medicaid for non emergency transportation…..David

Hi @din I’m not very familiar with locations in New York so I don’t know if the link I’m posting below is available near you or not. However the web page states they are located coast to coast so it may be worth a try.

You might also call your local dentist to see if they are able to direct you to someone who may help your mom. Occasionally the dentist I worked with would stop in to see an elderly or handicapped patient to do a quick exam, re-cement a crown or trim a denture. Without specialty mobile equipment such as an X-ray machine, a general dentist is pretty limited in what they can accomplish. There are some clinics now that are mobile and can provide full service for homebound patients.

I sure hope your mom can get some assistance for her dental needs. Let me know what you find out, ok?

Thanks, Lori. There’s no one in my area listed. I will continue looking. I’ve also asked her insurance. Waiting to hear.

Thank for that web site, Lori, they don't service Westchester County, which seems odd, since they service all around this area.
I'm still looking for a visiting dentist for my Mom in the lower part of Westchester County, if anyone has any ideas.
Taking an ambulette into a Dr's office would be very stressful at this time.
We've had home x-rays that were quite civilized, and have found a wonderful visiting NP.
Thank you for any info anyone has!

Hi @ritapooh Home dentistry is an underserved field right now. I remember years ago, the dentist I worked for and I would occasionally make some calls to patients who were homebound. We had limited services we could render but at least we were able to help in some capacity in a pinch.

I’m just thinking a good resource for you to might be your county social services department. Maybe they know of some dentists who make house calls in your mom’s community. Have you tried Social Services?

Hi Rita. I’m in the same boat. Still searching for a dentist that makes house calls in lower Westchester. I’ve also found a doctor that comes to the house, but so far no dentist. If you find one, please let me know, and I will do the same.

Thank you @loribmt. I wonder why the dentist home visit industry is non-existent, and seemingly mostly in Westchester County. Probably many factors. But maybe time to start a new business since i know at least 3 lower Westchester folks in need 🙂

@din thanks for sharing your info. We may want your home visit Dr info if you'd share. I may have a home dentist to share with you...I'll keep you posted.

These types of forums are so helpful and I so appreciate hearing how others handle their situations 🙂
Thanks to all!

Hi @ritapooh There are some logistical issues for being able to bring full capacity dental treatment into someone’s home. Lighting, seating, powered handpieces (drills), suction and dental X-rays would be some primary elements that are difficult to bring into the home setting without the supporting services to make them functional.
However, there are specialty outfitted vans or RVs which are fully capable of allowing a dentist or staff to ‘take the show on the road’. I used to volunteer in county sponsored clinical-care vans that would service the underprivileged or sometimes a group home where residents couldn’t get to a dental office.

I’m expecting the places that you’re seeing online who offer those home experiences are using vans equipped as roaming clinics. If the demand arises and makes it worthwhile for the upkeep of the vans with insurance, fuel, staffing and cost of outfitting, maybe the service that’s near you but not yet into the Weschester area would consider expanding their area on an ‘as needed’ basis. If you had a handful of patients the dentist knows they would be seeing, they may consider making a day of it. Might be worth a call to see if they make exceptions.
Good luck to you, @din and others who would benefit from a home visit!
Would your mom be able to go out of the house to access a van that in front of her home or driveway?

@din. That’s quite a difficult situation you are in. That’s the same situation that my mother found herself in. Too old to drive and too impaired to go up flights of stairs. Then she found out about a mobile dentist van that could come to where she lived. Problem solved. I think the best solution to your problem is to call the American Dental Association. Either the national or state association
