Amitriptyline 25 mg

Posted by srwolfe @srwolfe, Sep 26, 2023

Ok people my Dr has prescribed Amitriptyline 25 mg for my chronic body pain. Started on 9/21/2023 and so far no nite sweats. Instead I am really sleepy all day. Last night I took the pill at 5pm and feel a little more alert. I feel some pain relief but nothing close to the overall pain relief of using the cymbalta. Only five days hopefully the amitriptyline will kick in and help the pain. Anyone using Amitriptyline please let me know.

@irene5

I took Elavil ( amytriptyline) for 10 years. It was a total miracle for my migraines which I suffered with since age 8!!! . I was on 50mg and am a tiny lady. I slept like a baby, had no more aches and pains- it was amazing. Then after ten years I started passing out so I had to stop it. It was the best drug for me till it wasn’t. One pill at night before bed. As an elderly lady Medicare doesn’t like it now as it can be problematic for old people. I was put on just a small 5 mg dose a few years ago and couldn’t get my act together all day due to fatigue. That pill worked so well for for so long - I think our bodies change like every ten years or so. I miss it and wish it could work the way it did when I was in my 40’s.

👍I just wish it changed for the better! I’m weaning off of the Cymbalta again too. 🙏

I believe it can be a slippery slope to take amitriptyline to help with sleep. It has strong anticholinergic properties which has shown long term problems with dementia. It can take several weeks to wean off of amitriptyline depending on what dose you’re on, and can remain in your system for several weeks after your last dose. As always it is best to consult with your doctor to wean off properly and avoid depressive and suicidal thoughts. Sleep hygiene should always be considered first.

Did you have your doctor suggest surgery or pain injections? I have severe lumbar spinal stenosis and getting steroid injections to help manage pain and delay surgery as long as possible (I am 54).. I can’t walk, stand or sit too long and have pain/numbness/weakness. I also have hip pain and seeing a doctor to ask for an MRI to look at what might be causing this pain and treatment options.

@dlydailyhope and @lioness - sorry for the mixup!

@lioness how long were you on Lyrics before going off it, and did Lyrica make you constipated? I find since I have been on the generic Lyrica Inhave been constipated, despite taking psyllium fibre every day. I also have anal fissures for which I am using Nifedipine 0.2% ointment compound but that is not helping - possibly because I am constipated. I wasn’t, when I initially developed fissures.
