Ambien

I have been on 10 mg of Ambien for about 10 years and honestly, it’s something that I look forward to every night so I can get some sleep and peace of mind. It is controlling my life and there are days when I run out and I don’t sleep. I am wondering if anyone else has had the same experience, and they were able to recover from it. Thank you.

My insurance company stopped paying after 8 months but I can pay for it myself. It's generic so not too expensive.

Triciaann99, try taking less than the full 10 mgs to kind of reduce the amount you are taking every night. I was taking 10 mgs until I developed some unpleasant side effects and now I get 3 or 4 doses per one 10 mg tablet but admittedly, some nights I just get 6 hours of sleep. I do try to go to sleep without any ambien but if I can get to sleep, after a couple of hours I am wide awake and that is when I take a nibble of the tablet.

Thank you for your reply. I will try to take less than 10mg per night. It’s been a long battle with ambien but I do need to take less than more. I just need to take that step and know that eventually, my body will adjust.

Triciaann99 Some medical reports indicate that women do well on 5 mgs but men need 10. You might find you do just fine on 5 mgs. But you can reduce slowly and if you want to try taking 5 mgs and find it doesn't do the trick, you can always take a nibble more. I wish you good luck in this effort. I think you will do just fine.

Thanks for the encouraging words. It really does help. I too hope that I will do fine. 🙂 Much appreciated!

No side effects at all for me. It just allows my overactive brain to stop all the random thoughts so I can drift off to sleep.

Do you take Lunesta every night? Can we take for extended periods?

I think it would be wise to discuss this issue with your doctor.

Before I tried Ambien, I tried Benadryl alone and Benadryl in sleep meds from Advil and Tylenol. Not great success. I also tried Melatonin at various strengths and found no success. I tried an on-line relaxation program and other body-relaxation-meditations. Limited success. One method that I continue to use is to count slowly back from 100. I may have to do it several times but sometimes it does send me off to sleep.

That said, I do take a small amount of Ambien every night. I can usually get 4 doses from a 10 mg tablet. It seems that this amount, sometimes also using the backward counting will get me to sleep. I try to get to sleep without the Ambien which is sometimes successful but then I wake up a couple of hours later and struggle to get back to sleep so that is when I take the 1/4 tablet.

I do wonder if this is a problem that mostly affects women. My lady friends all seem to struggle with sleep but none of our husbands seem to have any problem whatsoever getting to sleep and staying asleep.

Holy cats. I too have chronic insomnia. Twice in my search for help I was put on Ambien. Both times I experienced severe amnesia for like 3 days. I’ll never take Ambien again. I’m now on 1.5 mg of Ativan and 50 mg of Hydroxyzine. Which works when I take it as prescribed. However, I am a chronic migraine sufferer and I find that it helps my headaches too. So I have to be very careful as it’s easy to taken too much Ativan and then I end up with withdrawals. I do have a psychiatrist and a new sleep doctor. So I don’t know what other sleep meds will work. And I’ve tried what seems like a million different meds.
