Approaching gastric bypass surgery

Posted by liver2007 @liver2007, Sep 27, 2022

Well it’s a rainy Tuesday as I make my to Jacksonville with a hurricane behind me. Tomorrow is my pre op day for my gastric bypass which is scheduled for Thursday. It’s finally here. That was a long 3 weeks of a liquid diet. All liquids all the time, but I did it. With a little weight I lost before I’m down 30 pounds. I feel a difference. I was never hungry nor did I have any problems.

I’m excited, happy, and a little concerned. But I keep thinking it may get worse for a bit, but then there’s going to be a new me. I’ve been carrying this old, tired , worn out me for decades. It’s a shame. There’s little photo evidence of my existence with my children and grandchildren, so many things I couldn’t do. I was embarrassed and never comfortable. No more. For whatever time I have left
I will be out there playing, enjoying myself, and family. I can’t wait!!!!!

Hey friends my bypass surgery is tomorrow. I’ve had abdominal surgery before but nothing like this. I’ve done my research and I know what I’m probably in for with the recovery but man I can’t help feeling sad, scared, but not wanting to back out since it took me 9 months to get here.

I’m not sure if they will since it’s at Mayo I really don’t know. I was at their offices and was told that they would let him know I was reaching out but I have gotten nothing. Pain is my everyday as well with all my other issues.

Hi, @cdschuldt - sounds frustrating to be told they'd let your surgeon know you were reaching out but to have gotten nothing.

I have gotten help with postsurgical pain at Mayo (for a prolapse surgery, so a different area) and got consult over the phone when my pain was still ongoing. I also talked to them on the phone about a rash I got after taking a medication prescribed for a UTI I developed after surgery.

I would not hesitate to call the main Mayo Clinic number and ask for the bariatric surgeon on call. Someone will be on call at all hours, and the Mayo Clinic operator can page them for you. This should produce a call back to you and some help with your pain, hopefully very promptly.

In addition to your postsurgical pain, how is your hiatal hernia repair that was making it hard to take deep breaths?

The Hiatal hernia repair is still give me some problems but not as bad as it had been. Also I got into my pain specialist and they gave me some pain meds to cover me for 2 weeks. So thankfully I’m more comfortable but still limited by pain on how much I can do. I have no stamina so I sit in my recliner most of the day crocheting.
