Afraid it the treatment meds for osteoporosis

Posted by mahonlye @mahonlye, Oct 23 12:13pm

I’m 68 with latest spine score of-37. My body type is very thin with BMI 19- but I eat extremely healthy diet and do excellent exercise every day - no falls. I have no other health issues so dont need to take medications. I’m totally petrified to take any of the medications I’ve been told I need for treatment of osteoporosis. I don’t know what to do! I know breaking bones will be awful but I’m so weary of these poisons they want to put in my body.

@mahonlye That’s why these boards are so very helpful, teaching us what options might help…giving us the courage to be proactive, to ask questions and not just blindly accept things we don’t feel right about..I have learned so much here-it’s priceless !

I am also a medical skeptic. A friend who has been on Fosamax for years, recently fell and broke her hip. The surgeon told her tha the Fosamax had not helped her. A lady doctor friend of mine said that it built bad bone. There are so many statements out there. Who do I believe? I do not take any drugs period.

There’s so many stories of people I know who have fallen and broken a bone even after being on treatment for years, it really has to make you skeptical. Why take a chance with all the possible effects when ultimately it won’t help you from fracturing? Such a dilemma.

@mahonlye It truly is a dilemma, as the doctors generally put their faith in the meds, which do help some people…but the side effects can be quite costly, given that many people have other health issues and really cannot tolerate more strong meds…and docs often overdose…the same doses for people of all sizes !? Reliable advice on supplements would really be welcome !

@mahonlye People with healthy bones also fracture them. Look at all those healthy athletes who break bones.
Breaking a bone after being on bone meds is no proof they don’t work. Perhaps the break is less extensive than it would have been.

@daisy17, my plan is to say on Forteo. If I have to stop Forteo, I'll take risidronate for several months. I will likely always want to return to Forteo. I feel safe on this medication.

@gently
You should check with your doctor, but unless something has changed since my mother took Forteo about 10 years ago, you can only take Forteo for two years and then need to discontinue using it.

gb76, thankyou. I really appreciate your post.
The cancer warning and it's attached 2 year limit were removed in 2020. My mom's experience was similar to your mom's. Bless their hearts.

If you are adamant that you do not wish to take pharma drugs then you might investigate strontium citrate. I have taken it for years and now have "normal" bone readings as per my dexa reading. I have had no fractures or side effects.
