Afraid it the treatment meds for osteoporosis

Posted by mahonlye @mahonlye, 4 days ago

I’m 68 with latest spine score of-37. My body type is very thin with BMI 19- but I eat extremely healthy diet and do excellent exercise every day - no falls. I have no other health issues so dont need to take medications. I’m totally petrified to take any of the medications I’ve been told I need for treatment of osteoporosis. I don’t know what to do! I know breaking bones will be awful but I’m so weary of these poisons they want to put in my body.

Thank you for your response…. Agree with all.
Oh yes, I’ve been on D3 for years and my levels are checked routinely. I am always thinking and aware of my movements to stay as safe as possible while lifting, walking, etc.. I do 5 days a week of exercise classes that include balance, resistance weight and core building strength - I’m trying desperately to avoid a fracture, but am also aware that my T score number puts me at high risk for fracture regardless.
For me personally, the struggle is simply accepting these medications that change my body on a cellular level, it’s so unnatural to make a 68 yr old grow bone. I’m afraid and I struggle knowing it might help my osteoporosis, but what does it destroy, change or do otherwise? My Drs remind me the risk stats are “low” but does anyone else worry that medications are sometimes pushed for financial purposes or that information comes out at a later date that disproves what the medical professionals supported prior- ie; if HRT is bad or good, if statins are needed etc…. These thoughts are what causes me to delay the treatment.

@mahonlye the drugs help with density but make the quality of your bones more brittle. A Osteo surgeon told me that. Ask your doctor.

mahonlye, your low T scores are most likely the result of declining estrogen levels, not lifestyle issues.
Your decision may depend upon which you fear worse fracture or medication. If you've seen anyone
suffer fracture it will weights heavily on your decision.
I've been on Forteo for almost three years with no side effects. And, though some will differ in opinion,
I think it is important to not tolerate side effects and to begin medication with the lowest dose available.
HRT for all it's advantages, isn't good at increasing bone density. It can be quite good at maintaining current density status.
I took one of the two drugs that look the safest to me-- Forteo. Tymlos is the other. But I think the choice, your choice needs some raw luck. I was taken with the fact that these medications leave your system the most rapidly, so side effects are usually temporary. You can just quit. Reclast side effects can last over a year. Prolia over six months, without counting rebound, Evenity over six months. May you never fracture

Will you take Fosamax after your Forteo ends?

I am in the same situation. I'm 75, 117 lbs and have a small build, with my worst Dexa score in my spine at -4. I can't take Forteo or Tymlos due to parathyroid issues. For me, Evenity is too new. My Dr wants me to take Fosamax, but I've decided not to take it because I've read that bisphosphonates don't actually reduce fracture risk very much. I take calcium, vitamin D, a collagen product containing Fortibone, walk and exercise. I hope I don't regret my decision to go drug free as I know my fracture risk is high.

@daisy17, my plan is to say on Forteo. If I have to stop Forteo, I'll take risidronate for several months. I will likely always want to return to Forteo. I feel safe on this medication.

Such a difficult situation- I did try an oral medication after my first BD Scan resulting in severe Gerd symptoms for about a month, so only did the one
dose. If you don’t mind me asking, what are your T scores?

@mahonlye I still get severe gerd periodically from actonel- got off it after 3 months- and prolia was horrible for me

@mahonlye, this is true of all the bisphosphonates, Prolia and Evenity. It isn't true of Forteo or Tymlos. Forteo is often used for osteonecrosis of the jaw and for non healing fractures. These are the medications that remodel bone and increase vascularization.
