AFib and GLP1 new study shows promising results for both
I am wondering if any AFib patients like me, who are controlling their AFib with drugs have also taken a GLP1 drug to lose weight? I read a study done in 2025 that showed that GLP1 lowered the amount of AFib events by about 13-18% in obese AFib patients. hrsonline org /news /glp1 -study-reduces-afib-events
I talked to my doctor about doing it, but she thought it might not be a good idea and I didn't talk to my cardio yet. In the study a few adverse reactions did happen but overall, the majority had good outcomes or no difference. They didn't do it to judge weight loss but just took low doses for the AFib question. I am going to talk to my cardiologist though asap because I want to use it for weight loss and the other could be a plus. If anyone has done this, please let me know how it went.
Thanks

Welcome to Connect. I have no direct experience with GLP-1 or AIF, but I was interested in your question. I read the article you referenced, and there are other recently published articles. For hose interested, here is link referenced in discussion: https://www.hrsonline.org/news/glp1-medications-lower-afib-risk/
I also found this Univ of Virginia that gives a good explanation of a study on the same subject:
https://www.uvahealth.com/healthy-balance/glp-1-may-also-help-heart
It also concludes with the following statement: "More research is still needed, especially regarding how different GLP-1 medications, doses, and treatment durations affect weight loss, inflammation, glucose control, Afib risk, and long-term cardiovascular health."
You might want to review this discussion in the Heart Rhythm group. Some members had problems with the combination. Another member mentioned the study you mentioned.

But everyone is an individual, and you are smart to discuss with your cardiologist before starting any new medication.
