Adult daughter with mental health issues in crisis.

We have a 40-year-old daughter with mental illness who lives 1800 miles from us. She has suffered from mental issues all of her life. When she is on her medications, she is fine. Until recently, she was living with her boyfriend and their 8-year-old son.

She notified us a year ago that she was breaking off all contact with us because our politics didn't align with hers.

About 2 months ago, we (her parents), her sister, and other family members received vicious emails from her accusing us of cutting off her credit cards, shutting down her bank accounts, putting cameras in her house, etc. She thinks we are doing this to force her to change her ways. She is delusional. No one in the family is doing anything to harm her. We continued to email with offers of help, to no avail.

Her boyfriend has moved himself and their son to his mother's house. He owns the house they were living in together, and he evicted her about a month ago. We just found out a couple of days ago, from another email from her, that she was starting legal proceedings against me —I'm not sure what for, but that isn't my worry.

She is now homeless and has no access to any of her funds (she gets a disability payment, but apparently is having a problem with the bank). She indicated that she refuses to take away any benefits from "real" homeless people, such as shelter or food services.
She won't answer my emails. I believe she is mentally in crisis.
I'm at a loss on how to help her.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, that is too much for you and your family to handle by yourselves.
As you said, she needs help. There must be a Social Worker, attached to an agency, or mental health clinic that you can contact for suggestions.
If you can find someone near her that would be helpful. I would concentrate on your location.

I have a similar situation with my 55 year old son. He is in prison again for drugs. This has been going on since he was 11 years old!

If I think of another thing, I will write again.
Blessings

I might contact an attorney in her county for advice on competency proceedings and involuntary commitment. Most states have laws that provide a way to get help for a person who is a danger to themselves or others.

Maybe adult protective services or the police or a private investigator in her area could help.
If she visits her son perhaps go try and see her. It sounds to me as though she needs to have a conservator.
Good luck,
Jake

@SusanEllen66 Thank you. I did contact a Crisis Center 2 months ago, when all this started. The counselor said he would contact her about the services they could offer her, but that if she didn't give permission, they couldn't talk to me. So, I never heard anything about what they did, or tried to do. They were very nice, but they haver to obey HIPAA laws

My heart and prayers go out to you as I have walked a similar road and can only hope my loved one will stay on their medication.

I would venture to say you need not worry about legal proceedings against you given her medical condition. But I’m not an attorney.

I don’t know what state you’re in but generally local authorities will conduct a wellness check if you know her location. With that your request for a wellness check could also accompany a concern for a psychological assessment. You may want to check into it. Additionally, Won might make a missing person‘s report.

Unfortunately, as an adult, so many laws are in place to protect individual rights that parents must allow the afflicted individual to make the decision for help. Please take time to care for yourself. God willing she will return to you when ready to receive help.

@mkwong Thank you. I am in Wisconsin, she is in Arizona. I think I know which town she is in, but I haven't a clue as to where.

Are you able to contact the boyfriend? He may be able to provide more specifics as to what is happening or where she is.

I feel your pain . As parents we want to help by trying to fix our adult children. My daughter was diagnosed with mental issues yrs ago, and we have had a tumultuous relationship . Her symptoms and actions have escalated as she ages, and she has enablers all around her . Unfortunately, she has tried legal action against me for frivolous issues , but unless she medicates and gets professional help , there is really nothing you can do . I have finally cut ties , which kills me , but I have cancer and have to minimize the stress . Hopefully , her enablers will have the strength to cut ties, she will continue her behavior . Her future is lonely , disconnected from everyone and self destructive . I pray for her daily . I read a great book , “Boundaries “ and I live by it in all aspects of my life . You might try it . Good luck . Keep us posted .

Thank you so much. I will look at that book, for sure. Praying for a quick cure for your medical issue,

@chrisd128 If she is a risk for harming herself or others, depending on the state, there is mandated reporting. This goes beyond HIPAA laws. I would check back with the crisis center person and at least let them know of what you know to be the latest about her situation. Also, I hope the boyfriend would be a person that could help at least give you an update on her. Hang in there.
