Abnormal Diastolic Function

Posted by blue717 @blue717, 4 days ago

I am so stressed out. A month ago, I had a stress test done. The doctor sent me a letter saying "ok" and no changes from the last scan. The other day, I received the actual report, which said "Abnormal Diastolic Function." Which to me means not normal. So I called the office. A woman got back to me, saying that that has nothing to do with how I live my life unless I have uncontrolled blood pressure. I asked what previous test they had looked at, and she told me it is a form letter they send out, and it really doesn't mean they actually saw a prior report. The letter is sent so they can get the results to you as quick as possible. No lie, I couldnt make that up!

I can sympathize. Last week I got my echo reports with a brief note from the Dr. He indicated that overall there had been no change from the previous echo and that overall he was pleased, though the mitral prosthesis had a “slight”leakage. I looked at both and saw a lot of apparent changes, and not for the better. Moderate mitral prosthetic leakage is not “slight”. Nor would I call the valve normal as the report did.
The report itself said there was no evidence of stenosis, yet when I looked up various measurements and parameters, if I’m understanding what I’m reading they indicate severe stenosis. I pray not.
I called and made an appt to get clarification. I saw the PA, who promptly informed me that she didn’t know how to read echos and wasn’t trained in that. I had explained to the scheduler exactly why I wanted to come in. I can’t make this up either!
I understand your stress; I’m feeling that too. I don’t know whether or not to get a surgical consult. Scary.
I’m not waiting for them to”get back to me”. I’m researching on my own.
I hope you get an explanation from the dr if/when you get to see one.

Hi Blue. If your questions are going unanswered and you are filled with anxiety, it's time for another cardiologist. I wasn't happy with mine and I switched from a man to a woman. She listens and explains and always responds when I send an email through the portal.
Also, I have diastolic dysfunction and it's no joke. It caused pulmonary hypertension. Idk if DD is the same as abnormal diastolic function, but it sounds like it is. Diastolic dysfunction means the ventricle does not fill will blood completely so the heart has to work harder to push the blood out.
You are wise to do your own research and to be your own advocate. Just make sure your sources are reputable such as Cleveland and Mayo clinics. Please keep in mind that stress is your heart's enemy, so lots of deep breaths and herbal tea. If they offer you a beta blocker, take it. It helps.
Good luck on your journey and keep us posted.
