AAA with High Blood Pressure - Concerned about Nearing Surgery

Posted by rickp24 @rickp24, Apr 8 5:39pm

My Ascending Aortic Aneurysm is 4.8 cm. My blood pressure is always over the 130/80. Sometimes 145/90 or higher. Even laying down. I do take blood pressure meds and statin. My concern: my doctor is not doing anymore steps to get it lower. He is rated high. I live in Kansas City area. I worry it being that high and not below 120/80 that I am looking at surgery soon.

Should I push to get more meds or different meds? Should I just wait for the surgery to happen? I am 70 male. I have read also that live expectancy after surgery is like 5 years at best. Kinda worried here.

I was told my blood pressure must be kept at 110/70 to 120/79 You need more blood pressure medication. Please watch the salt in your diet too. Salt can elevate your blood pressure along with caffeine

I’ve been monitoring my BP since November 2023 & it ranges from 167/110 to 152/101. Suffered from Edema two weeks ago, went to ER, after ECHO, possible left atrium enlargement. Haven’t felt well in 2 yrs. Awaiting to see new provider next month.
I just wanna feel good, again. The weight I’ve gained in last 2 months is depressing & I appreciate these blogs, because my family has enough problems. They don’t need me “whining”
Anyways, I hope you can lower your BP and have a successful surgery. God Speed

Where did you read 5 years? Is there some additional factor about your health in addition to your aneurysm? I'm not a doctor and it sounds like a complex thing to pin down, but here's a link to an article with the conclusion: "Long-term survival of patients undergoing elective surgery for ascending aortic aneurysm who survive the postoperative period completely recover their life expectancy."
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7141111/
There are some other articles with conclusions that are not so rosy https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC9422752/pdf/ezac161.pdf https://academic.oup.com/ejcts/article/62/3/ezac244/6573263 but 5 years sounds a little pessimistic.
