2 things, plugging toilet and sitting in bathroom for way too long.

Posted by geppetto @geppetto, 6 days ago

It appears my wife is now overestimating what she needs for toilet paper (#1) and ends up plugging toilet. And, when she does go to the toilet (#1) she can spend way too much time in there. Looking for recommendations on how to address these new issues. She has Alzheimer's, Parkinson syndrome and luey body.

@bclane this is an interesting share. Toilet clogged, run a bucket of hote water a gallon or so (as long as it's not up to rim), FLUSH, and it will push everything through? ALong with a potential second try. ANd a bunch of liquid soap, even better to clean the stopped up toilet. Our work is never done!

I'm going to try this. Best Karla

@kjc48 I don't think you flush right away. The hot water should make everything go down. Then flush. If you flush at the same time as you put in the hot water, it may not work the first time and the bowl would overflow. Another option would be to turn off the water behind the toilet before flushing. Just a suggestion.

@curious44 (Barbara) thank you so much. Gosh sometimes I think I need a wife. And you're my wife this morning! The worst part for me in all of this is having to make all these decisions by myself. But then, we sign on, and we know, feel and see, "We are not alone." I'm so rattled this morning, I can't even find the exclamation mark on the PC. Best, Karla

My husband also spends way to long on the toilet. I sometimes think he doses off. At this point everything takes a long time for him even just getting up from the table. Yes, he does have an enlarged prostrate so that may be part of it. He does not have UTI nor is he constipated. I just keep checking on him which irritates him too......The endless joys of cargiving. Grateful he can still take himself to the bathroom

I must say that my time in that room increased dramatically with all the various and many different drugs that I have used over the years fighting MF/MDS. Here is what I did, that helped things for me. First off, I use Benifiber EVERY morning in my coffee. That has helped with the never ending cycle of going from diararha to constipation. Meta Mucel works great if you can stand that horrible Orange flavor, but it's not as easy to take as the Benifiber. What ever you decide on, you need to do it EVERY day. Also, eat more fiber and drink more water. Both will help. I installed one of those bolt on bediets. They are easy to install and are pretty inexpensive, and actually work. Both of those two things cut down on the amount of paper used or needed. If you are getting things plugged up, then just flush more often, and use a drain cleaner every so often to keep the pipes from clogging so things run on down smothly. Also... don't take a smart phone into the bathroom. It will increase the potty time a good deal.

I have another crazy problem that is very aggravating. My husband has prostate cancer that is treated with “active surveillance”. This has been going on for many years. When he has to urinate it is frequent and usually urgent. He takes medication for both issues. The problem is on occasion he forgets to lift the seat so that when I use the toilet, I sit on a wet seat. Ugh! He’s very sensitive and if I say anything, he’ll be offended and I know he’ll deny it and somehow it will be my fault. The only solution I can think of is leaving the seat up all the time which he won’t go for. He’s a nut about keeping the lid down. The only other thing I can think of is wiping the seat each time I have to use it. Any other solutions? I know this is a very minor issue, but very aggravating to me.

My husband for whatever reason uses too much toilet paper and will use it to blow his nose several times while he's sitting on the pot and throw that in there too and he forgets to flush the toilet.
During the last game of last year's World Series, the toilet backed up all the way from the first floor to the second floor shower. Yuck! So during the most exciting game of the year, I had to call a plumber and pay the after hours rate to have him come out and snake out the drain all the way to the street. I am just glad that he can still get to the bathroom on his own and wipe his own butt, I just have to check that the toilet has been flushed every time he goes in there.

@mickey5455 I had the opposite problem with my husband. I wanted him to sit with the seat down to urinate because when he stood to do this, he would usually miss the toilet and get urine all over everything including the floor so that when I walked into the bathroom at night, I would step into urine on the floor. It took about 3 or 4 months of following him into the bathroom and asking him to please sit to pee. Now he does it all the time. Potty training all over again!

You made me laugh! The problems we face. I can’t imagine accomplishing that.

My wife changes her mind fairly quickly. So if I ask her can I help her up and she says no. I wait 20-30 secs and ask again and she says yes.

@trav77 My parents taught us three boys to sit to pee. My father was an engineer and a thoughtful man who knew that peeing into a toilet from standing invites both aerosols and droplets of toilet contents which can arc several tens of cm up and out of the toilet, onto the seat, the floor, and onto the wall adjacent to the toilet. Also, the flushing mechanics cause the same thing....believe it or not, and if you have a toothbrush nearby.................................................... So, we boys were firmly invited to sit when doing our business, and then to close the lid before flushing. These two things greatly reduce the....uhhhhh.........migration.........yeah, migration....of unsavory particles and droplets over to surfaces where they can damage paint, make floors stink, and infect surfaces of things you'd rather not touch if you were savvy about it all.
