Getting VA Approval For Mayo Is A Nightmare
My husband had triple bypass surgery and tons of tests and still having jaw pain - nitro relieves the discomfort. The VA in Iron Mountain MI, community care, states they don't give authorization and won't pay for MAYO help. They said they need NATIONAL approval. Marshfield Clinic is filling out a request for service to Mayo but MI won't commit. Has anyone else gone through this and where can we go please!

eddie,
It would appear you are younger than 65?
I am 77 years old
Thank you for taking the time to explain...hope you are doing very well now
Oh - wouldn't you be going through Medicare? I don't know much about the VA system, but most folks seem to prefer medical care through Medicare, but supplemental coverage is sometimes an issue?
Are you also on Medicare Part A and B, by any chance? If so, use that instead of the VA insurance.
we just got a quote - our congressman's office is working hard also for us...thank you so much!
eddiereen, Way back before I was 65 I was going to VA for medical care. When I turned 65 I noticed when I went to VA they charged Medicare for the charges.
With that I moved to Medicare so not to take a slot for a veteran that did not have Medicare. I have both A and B and go to Mayo Jacksonville. I can go to any doctor or provider that takes medicare versus VA centers and clinics.
I agree with maoconectuser1 with most preferring to use Medicare as opens up a lot of different providers and locations. VA health insurance is very different than TriCare (retired military). Tri Care would be a secondary payer and I think the poster was talking about VA health care for veterans.
thanks so much for your information - Eddie has been on VA for years now - Vietnam Vet...its only been an issue since we wish to get another opinion outside of Marshfield and the VA....we are thinking of doing Medicare with a supplement...just an added cost...as many others wish; to go back to several years ago when our monthly budget was far less...but healthcare is the number one in my mind need...without it you don't have much else...God Bless You.
eddiereen, I too am a Vietnam vet. I served in the Air Force (air crew) from 1966-1972. I had one tour of duty in Vietnam S.E. Asia earning the Air Medal.
You can find some Medicare supplements (not Medicare Advantage as Mayo and other specialty hospitals don't take most of them) that will cover the co-pays and deductibles of Medicare. And some, like mine, reimburse me some of the costs of Medicare sending you a check or credit to your bank account each month to help reimburse your medicare monthly premium.
It has been a life saver for us financially. I have heart failure and the recent prostrate cancer. My wife couple of years ago got the unusual diagnosis of type 1 diabetic at age 72.
Good luck to you and Eddie!!!
May I ask if you ever found a way to get your husband seen by mayo? My husband is a veteran that has had a heart attack and possibly stroke in the past year along with abnormal brain scans since 2022 with no real diagnosis or treatment from the VA. I am just trying to at least get someone to review his records and advise something because so far we haven’t been able to even get that from the VA.
