Anyone experienced nipple soreness post menopause?

Posted by margaret902 @margaret902, Sep 23, 2012

I am 58, post menopausal. Within about the last week my nipples have become tender, similar to how it used to feel before or on my period. They also are more flat, and the aereola is less pink than normal. They used to change with temperature, but now seem to be more flattened out in general. I don't feel sick otherwise, and am not on any medications. Anyone out there who has experienced this kind of change or tenderness?

I am 80, and my nipples hurt all the time. I have no idea why that is so.

I just joined, hoping for support and maybe some help from others on my issue. Last month I discovered a lumpy feel in right breast, I went to urgent care, the NP felt it, breast has heat that comes and goes, and with no doctor (he retired 3 yr ago and have not found another yet) and having issues with getting on medicare. Now today, the left breast along with the right have small redness areas just above the nipple and both breasts are sore. Am I still in menopause???? I have alot of stress right now, husband was recently dx prediabetic, has had to have fingers amputated from an accident and was dx with congestive heart failure. I"m a mental mess trying to deal with everything and now this. Help.

We are the same age, I also am post menopausal, and have VERY tender nipples, and recently found a lumpy moveable thing in right breast. I went to urgent care and NP felt it and scheduled me for a consult with a obgyn nov 6th. I was hoping for mamogram but I guess i have to wait. I have some red areas on right breast above nipple, and the left breast has a nipple that kinda is stuck inward? Very scared.

Have not had a pcp in over 3 yrs now due to our doctor of over 40 years retiring. I"m in Maine and doctors up here are very few and in between and it is very frustrating. I bet I called over 40 doctors in cities and towns within a 50 mi radius of our home, and not one was available. They are are "taking no new patients at this time". I was born and brought up here, never have I seen it this bad medical wise. My Mom was well in her late 70s and had a breast issue she was convinced was breast cancer. It turned out to be some kind of infection she had, so when I found this lumpy mass I am very concerned, heck I"m worried as all get out! Thank you for your kind reply, I certainly need the mental support!

I am 59, been post menopausal for nearly 10 years and I get hormone pellet implants every 14 weeks along with taking a daily prescription similar to progesterone. I began having nipple soreness only on the left breast a few days ago and then last night I had some discharge. I don't feel any lumps and have mammograms annually. Luckily, I have an appt in a couple weeks to do blood work for my next pellet implant. After reading everyone's comments, I feel better thinking this is about hormones because at each appt, the Dr asks if I've had any nipple soreness or discharge. I will provide an update after my appt.

@eglenn, you're wise to discuss this at your upcoming appointment. Does the nipple soreness come and go or is it constant? You may wish to keep a journal of the soreness and discharge to share with your doctor.

I too have had itchy nipples in years past. I have heavy breasts. Just recently the soreness started. I have had a pain in the left breast at the armpit. That pain doesn't go away. I have told the mammogram people of this. There doesn't seem to be a problem to them. I have fatty tissue.

My mother had breast cancer not much older than I am now, 71.

What should I do? I have already had a yearly mamo nothing was found

Hello, @nolano, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. That sounds quite uncomfortable, and I'd want to figure it out, too.

Here is some Mayo Clinic information about breast pain in general https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/breast-pain/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20350426

Hoping that members here like @trixie1313 @oldertoo @jkhambati @beverly0223 may have some thoughts for you on why this may be happening and next steps. I'd also like you to meet @baxtersmom.

When did your nipple soreness start? Is it constant or is it off and on?

I'm 73, and experiencing this too but mine happens when I'm in my bra too much. Seems that constant pressure on nipples makes them hurt. This morning when I woke up my left one was especially sore I recall possibly laying in a manner that was pinching it. ? It's easing up as the day progresses. No bra today. I put some Ar
nica Montana gel on it too.

is anyone able to share informative answers as to possibilities with this ? I am 59 have been post menopausal for 19 yrs.. recently, my right breast (nipple) started feeling like it was itchy.. and now, its gotten to a result of a soreness sensation.. No, I cannot see a doctor.. why? because I'm unemployed, unable to get medical assistance coverage (along with food stamps because a 400lb employee at my local community center incredibly entered horrifically inaccurate information.. thats another story) but what I'm saying is I have no insurance. all of a sudden experiencing nipple soreness on only one nipple.. and wanted to find out if I'm facing a major / terminal situation . I did have a mamogram a couple years ago and never again will I subject myself to that ! .. I'm 59 years old.. no breast cancer history in my family.. and just wondering what less concerning possible issues would be the cause of this recent onset of soreness I'm experiencing.
