What helps improve osteoporosis without medication?

Posted by imatine @imatine, Dec 4, 2020

Hello, did anyone here try to heal from osteoporosis away from all the prescribed medications we all know of? Did you try following a specific diet? Excercise? Meditation, etc. ? Thank you

There’s a book called The Calcium paradox.

The author talks about how supplementation with cod liver oil, vitamin D3 and vitamin K 2 (MK4 and MK7) causes calcium to go to the bones rather than getting deposited as plaque in arteries arteries.

Thank you 06111945cc, this information is entirely new to me and of particular interest as I have artherialsclerosis and was trying to find ways to decrease that problem when osteoporosis news arrived and has held my attention since July. Your noting the plaque connection with calcium obviously and finely connects both. I'll look for cod liver oil in pill form as I do not think I could accept it in straight liquid.
Losing faith in my ability to successfully cure the bone disease I am considering either Prolia or Evenity. The longer life use of Prolia on record and its broader application to other maladies
as well seem to make it more attractive. The black box warnings on Evenity is unnerviing.

I have Gerd and sometimes when I sleep, acid runs up into my throat and lungs. Would Famotidine help this. The PPI that I am on had stopped my issues unless I eat something really bad for health. Did you have any situation like mine? If so, did the Famotidine work as well? You can email me if your would rather respond on email - stanleydiane180@gmail.com.

Hi, Famotidine isn't as effective but it is holding me steady. I haven't had problems sleeping due to GERD but I do have burning when I eat certain foods and upset stomach when my stomach is empty. Cutting back on wine has really helped. 🙁

@lashu once I read about the studies behind the black box warning for Evenity, I am not as concerned. There was no increase in cardiovascular issues or events when compared to placebo, only to alendronate (Fosamax) which actually reduces those risks, so the comparison needs to take that into account.

I do have concerns about side effects and the relatively as yet unknown effects of opposing sclerositin, and am considering doing 6 months, since the first half of the year is more bone building but the second half has more anti-resorptive properties according to McCormick's book.

windyshores, thank you for your shared experiences and reflections on the positive and negative aspects of Evenity. As I gradually realize that my efforts at fighting the disease/osteoporosis feel insufficient, I once again opened a dialogue with my endocrinologist. Prolia looks more reassuring because it has been in use since 2010, while Evenity only since 2017. Prolia also seems to have beneficial side effects in reference to other health conditions.'So I am waiting to hear from my doctror about this alternative. The one negative about it is its six months interval for shots. Evenity is monthly. this shorter injection period appeals because if some necrotic effect began in the jaw the bone formation process that causes this in these meds is more quickly removed/dealt with. A quandary that I shall have to resolve.

@lashu are you avoiding Tymlos or Forteo because you had radiation? I forget if it was you.

My docs won't use Prolia and McCormick was against it too. It is tricky to get off it because there is an abrupt drop in density and increase in fracture risk.

Have you seen McCormick's boook "Great Bones"? It goes into detail.

What health problems does it help? I was concerned because it affects some aspects of the immune system and my docs agreed.

I don't know the status of your bones but feel a bone builder like Evenity, Tymlos or Forteo seems to be the best place to start, unless you are borderline.

Hello windyshores, and thank you for helping me with sorting out the details that these various medications present. I think Prolia avoided some of theproblems that my cancer history presented. My history involved a sarcoma, but I had no radiation or other treatments, only surgery to remove a tumor whose malignancy had not spread. My concern with Evenity was twofold: the heart issues and its Black Box warning(its rejection by a major British board also)/shorter period of time on the market than Prolia). None of the options are without problems. At some point I just had to make a decision in spite of my worries. I feel my efforts to solve the problem, to rid my body of the disease of osteoporosis, through exercise and supplements/foods would not be sufficient. The shared experiences presenting on this Mayo Clinic Connect site are a true blessing.

WindyShores,

Now do you believe
exercise and supplements/foods will be sufficient?

Exercise and supplements and proper foods appear to have helped some individuals successfully strengthen their bones and improve their DEXAN results. After six weeks of trying to do the regimens recommended, I feel I am not a good candidate for these. I am caregive for a family member and have obligations toward others that demand attention. While many are capable of addressing these demands as well as following the needed regimens, I am not.

@06111945cc no, for those of us with advanced osteoporosis, supplements/foods and exercise are absolutely not enough, in my view.

@lashu I am less concerned about the black box warning for Evenity after reading the studies. There was no difference in cardiovascular events between placebo and Evenity, but there were fewer with alendronate, possibly because alendronate actually improves cardiovascular health. According to the study I read. Tymlos also was not initially approved in Europe. I have decided to go ahead with Evenity after Tymlos, then I will do Reclast but 20% doses each time.
