What helps improve osteoporosis without medication?

Posted by imatine @imatine, Dec 4, 2020

Hello, did anyone here try to heal from osteoporosis away from all the prescribed medications we all know of? Did you try following a specific diet? Excercise? Meditation, etc. ? Thank you

In 2004 I was 51 turning 52 at the very end of the year:
Firstly, my numbers
2004 Femoral Neck -2.8
2019 Femoral Neck -.6

I tried Doctor prescribed meds in 2004. I did not feel that I could live with the side effects.
I stopped the meds; I did lots of research and had some more tests run to ck my hormones.

I began a regime of:
Bioidentical Hormones
Strontium Citrate at night
Ez Orb Calcium in the morning; there are generic forms of this now available which are cheaper

Plus:
All the usual suspects of good health were taken or cked...vit d, k, weight bearing and jarring exercise etc
Melatonin a small amount at night to sleep, I mention because a study has shown it to be helpful to encourage the body to grow bone.

I have had no known fractures and no side effects since beginning strontium citrate or this regime.

How long do you exercise in the pool?

@kathleen1314 just want to comment that strontium will make the DEXA results look better than they are. Strontium replaces calcium in the bones and is denser, so the DEXA looks denser. That doesn't mean you didn't have gains, but the radiologist should adjust for the strontium. Did you take 680mg? Of course the hormones may have improved bone density too.

@06111945cc no, for those of us with advanced osteoporosis, supplements/foods and exercise are absolutely not enough, in my view.

@lashu I am less concerned about the black box warning for Evenity after reading the studies. There was no difference in cardiovascular events between placebo and Evenity, but there were fewer with alendronate, possibly because alendronate actually improves cardiovascular health. According to the study I read. Tymlos also was not initially approved in Europe. I have decided to go ahead with Evenity after Tymlos, then I will do Reclast but 20% doses each time.

Wendy , I totally agree with you . One other modality other than Evenity is that I am going to start a program called Biote which is bioidentical hormone pellets that they place under your skin and it’s based on your lab results. I can’t wait . It will also improve my bones . It will be a mixture of testosterone & estradiol that my labs show I am very deficient in.

Well.....not exactly to heal osteoporosis, but to improve.....yes. I eat yogurt every day, with fruit, low carbs, good protein, take daily Centrum Silver for Women, Super B Complex, D3, Zinc, Citrical or a calcium supplement. AND, I use water therapy 2-3X daily in a pool for conditioning, exercise. That is probably the best suggestion you can try, if your doctor approves. My doc said I have to do that for the rest of my life...I consider that a direct order from someone who knows me and my body and wants my best. So, I do it. I love it. I'm stronger, have less pain, move better. I walk in the water-sideways/backwards/front, do marching, use water barbells. Simple, easy and lots of hard work to feel and be better. It works wonders for me. Wishing you well!

If it improves without medication and using natural process , nothing can be better than that.

Depending on age and no history of hormonal breast cancer, that might be very helpful! I have had a nasty hormonal breast cancer so stay away from hormones. My understanding has been that over 60 or so we need to avoid them anyway. I haven't researched it for obvious reasons so if you can enlighten others, that would be interesting to read.

One of the biologics is Prolia. It is a monoclonal antibody.

@mtran88788 I too am awaiting delivery of the Marodyn LIV. Don’t be dismayed if you don’t see a bump in your BMD scores in November. I was told by those in that actual business that you must use it for a year to a year yr and a half to see results. And, also be aware that more of your gains may be realized in the trabecular bone area ( the inside architecture area of the spine for example) and that’s not captured on a DEXA. But I’m hoping to see a change in the DEXA as well!! Good luck !!!!

Yes and if you're looking to measure what's going on in the inside of the bone/microarchitecture of the bone/trabecular bone, see if there's a REMS Echolight scanner near you. It's the ultrasound scan that gives both a BMD score and a bone quality score since the ultrasound measures all the way through the bone. It's the scanner of choice across Europe and is slowly beginning to be adopted in the US. It is way more accurate than DEXA. REMS has only a .5-1% margin of error, whereas DEXA margin of error is 3-5% plus the issues with technician errors and the inconsistency between different DEXA machines. REMS doesn't have the technician or machine-to-machine inconsistencies. The only problem is how few there are in the US. There are a 6-8 of them I've heard but it's difficult to come up with a list. These are the ones I know of for sure:
OsteoSmart in Hinsdale, IL +16309225071
OsteoStrong in Wilmette, IL +12244878833
StrengthX in Black Mountain, NC +18285057200
CentralCarolinaOrtho.com +19197741355 with Dr Andrew Bush who is revolutionizing osteoporosis care
I've heard Texas and NJ may also have a clinic with a REMS

How would this other method affect treatment?

I am 66 and found out three months ago that I have osteoporosis in the lower spine and ostopenia in both hips. Just finished 3 months of Fosamax and definitely not continuing. Worst side effect was intense hipbone pain which ended in vomiting from the pain. I read up about Natto and have been taking it for 3 weeks. I intend to continue taking it for the rest of my life. Took a bit of getting used to, but now have it daily in a cup of miso soup and grate a little cheese on top (a) to make it more palatable and (b) as I read that the Vitamin K2 is better absorbed with fats.

There are several books about how bodies clean out old bone, and regrow new bone. Understanding the remodeling process can help you see things you can do to improve your bone quality and density. One simple place to start might be Lani Simpson's No Nonsense Bone Health Guide. I have made slow but recognizable progress over the last 5 years. I wish you luck in your journey.
