What helps improve osteoporosis without medication?

Hello, did anyone here try to heal from osteoporosis away from all the prescribed medications we all know of? Did you try following a specific diet? Excercise? Meditation, etc. ? Thank you

Well.....not exactly to heal osteoporosis, but to improve.....yes. I eat yogurt every day, with fruit, low carbs, good protein, take daily Centrum Silver for Women, Super B Complex, D3, Zinc, Citrical or a calcium supplement. AND, I use water therapy 2-3X daily in a pool for conditioning, exercise. That is probably the best suggestion you can try, if your doctor approves. My doc said I have to do that for the rest of my life...I consider that a direct order from someone who knows me and my body and wants my best. So, I do it. I love it. I'm stronger, have less pain, move better. I walk in the water-sideways/backwards/front, do marching, use water barbells. Simple, easy and lots of hard work to feel and be better. It works wonders for me. Wishing you well!

I believe one of the reasons my osteoporosis has become as bad as it is is that I have been on a PPI for 2 and 1/2 years.
I have read that you should be reevaluated after one year. Proton pump inhibitors are known to break down the bone.

The same with me. I’m 71 and had been on PPI for over 5 years. I had wanted to stop for other reasons but my PT warned me PPI can lead to bone loss. So my new Gastro doc is weening me off and replacing with Famotidine.

I took myself off of the PPI I was taking when I learned it was bad for the bones. My gastro and GP never said a thing about it. I am now taking Famotidine.

Hi ess77. I am so glad to hear that water therapy can be used! I have been doing water therapy for other issues with my body. I do the walking and marching and will look into the water barbells. And your supplements sound good too. I may skip the B complex but the others I will look into. One of the issues I face is to not overdo the calcium and I have to try to figure how much I'm getting in foods as well as in supplements. Thank you for sharing!

I took myself off of the PPI I was taking when I learned it was bad for the bones. My gastro and GP never said a thing about it. I am now taking Famotidine.

I have Gerd and sometimes when I sleep, acid runs up into my throat and lungs. Would Famotidine help this. The PPI that I am on had stopped my issues unless I eat something really bad for health. Famotidine also causes some absorption issues.

I got off a PPI by transferring to famotidine and then tapered down and off famotidine and now use it only as needed.

PPI's, I have read, cause the body to adapt by producing more acid. So when you stop, you might be worse off than when you started- at least at first. Transferring to famotidine gives a chance to taper off that slowly.

I have terrible GERD. I don't eat after 5pm and sleep at a slant. No coffee or alcohol or spicy foods. I take Tums and occasionally famotidine.

PPI's were originally to heal ulcers, as I remember and the drug insert says to use it for two weeks. But docs have been prescribing them long term for awhile. Endocrinologists aren't happy with this, at least mine isn't!

I will be going in for an EGD this coming Thursday and we'll find out if my doctor wants me to continue on PPIs.
For over 2 years he has been treating my Barrett's esophagus.

What seems to be the routine is that if you’re diagnosed with GERD a PPI is prescribedand because it works it just keeps getting represcribed , filled, and taken without any real thought on the part of the dr. And the patient relies on the dr to provide guidance. I feel this same process happens all the time with other drugs. I was lucky enough to have an insightful PT who cared enough to really encourage me to get off it years ago after taking it for about 2 years. When I called the gastroenterologist office to let them know what I was thinking and planning to do they told me in no uncertain terms that this was a mistake. I would suffer serious discomfort and issues. I decided to forge on anyway and had NO problems. So glad I did!!!! Good luck to you!!!

@ans so glad you had no rebound! I had HORRIBLE burning GERD going off it, even after a short course. My friend did too, and she went back on. I was lucky to read about the rebound effect and going on Zantac then tapering worked !

There’s a book called The Calcium paradox.

The author talks about how supplementation with cod liver oil, vitamin D3 and vitamin K 2 (MK4 and MK7) causes calcium to go to the bones rather than getting deposited as plaque in arteries arteries.
