Anxiety and Acid Reflux anyone?
I have anxiety that started 18 months ago never had it before in my life. About a year ago I started to develop acid reflux and it’s just getting worse. Anyone else have that problem. Doctors just keep throwing medication at me and they’ll make me sick I don’t think I’m alone.

Anxiety is with me all the time. My problem is I try to resist and it doesn’t work. Bites even harder like a pity bull!
I have had acid reflux for a long time for about 30 years on and off didn’t think much of it until I got depression and started stressing over a passing of friend i had andioscopy and colonoscopy done and was diagnosed with gastritis where I lost 40 lbs in less then a week the the doctor told me my stomach was producing too much acid all his medication didn’t help me every time my stomach burned i stressed every time i stressed my stomach burned a friend of mine told me to take proxitine for my stress after i got the medication from my family doctor in about one to two weeks my acid reflux went away i started to regain weight and was back on my feet i had a bee bite and the doctor prescribed me a heavy dose of untibiotics and killed all my good bacteria in my stomach i sometimes blame that for my gastritis and every morning for about a week i took a shot of raw potato juice one hour before breakfast and always i had with food low-fat plain yogurt for probiotic it worked out great for me whereas the Gastrologist wanted to do surgery and didn’t even know what was going on stress is the mother of all diseases i hope sharing my experience will help a lot of people Mayo Clinic is also the best place to get good advice thanks please get back with me if i can share more always a pleasure
I am in Canada no mayo.
So much sets off my acid reflux. I don’t know anymore. Even a backed potato at snack time.
My anxiety the last couple of days is high.
Sounds like you have had a heck of a journey.
I am in line for a colonoscopy, endoscopy (no date) and barium X-rays Dec 7). It takes time.
I am very tired all the time.
I can relate to this. I in fact sleep with 4 pillows under my head at night to help prevent me from waking up choking with acid reflux that yes seems to be related to stress (but also my diet at times which I try not to eat those foods that do make me prone to acid reflex). All I have ever used medication wise has been over the counter stuff like Maalox Plus & Tums.
I sleep propped up too. Now my back is starting to hurt!
At least that what I think it’s from?
Very well said, "stress is the mother of all diseases." this is why CBT wich helps with framing our problems and concerns and worries in proper perspectives helps.
As well, as Plato said long ago, part cannot be well unless whole is well. So since there are so many other little "mothers of diseases" like playful enjoyable activities, both mental and physical (I do brisk walking at least 30 minutes a day, or stairs in my bldg, or some kicking of imaginary soccer in my apt) it's upto your imagination) meeting with community group over coffee (social connection, another "mother" that many psychiatrists believe is the reason behind overdose deaths.
With a busy, mentally and physically, body we get hungry that's when a healthy food is body often likes; without such hunger the outcome may not be what we wish. That's what seems to have worked for me for eight decades...without meds, tests, surgeries, and rare doc visits.
I wish you find your enjoyable life we all can and want.
Hello there ... from a fellow human with Human woes so since Mayo science is for humans it's good for humans. I am afraid I did not see you mention CBT nor WHY did your anxiety triggered some 18 mo ago. CBT helps us by showing us how to understand and manage problems that cause anxiety-that-disrupts our life. IOW, we can't have a world without worries, but we CAN still by help from a reflective/examining mind understand where we may be reacting in ways that are hurting and unhealthy.
Would be good to know your progress.
I have been doing online. CBT psycho/educational classes along with mindfulness meditation.
I had a brain hemorrhage almost 4 years ago at Pilates. After an excellent and very grateful recovery I was healthy, walked 8-10
Km about 5 times a week and more activities. Happy, healthy, no worries.
After 28 months I thought it was time
To try pilates again. I went to the same
Studio 2x one week and the next week the anxiety started.
I also was rear ended car accidents in 10
Years.
My counselllors, ans the doctors have no idea if this what caused it. (There is more trauma from 28 years ago too) which I had LOTs of counselling.
The problem is that it is free floating GAD so I have anxiety almost all the time and I am getting so worn out. It consumes me.
Hard to go out, so socialize or be creative.
My arms burn when I am really anxious and so does my face sometimes.
I have had enough
I take pantoprazole for acid reflux for about 6 months and proxitine 10 mg for about 5years taking it one day at a time it has helped me a great deal but sooner or later I am going to eventually come off them god willing
Sleep on your left side with your head on wedged pillow like or tilt in your bed from with your right leg crossed angled it helps a lot whereas your esophagus is up and belly is down and acid is staying down where it saposed to be
